Bangalore: Yeddyurappa Surrenders, Sent to Judicial Custody

Bangalore: Yeddyurappa Surrenders, Sent to Judicial Custody

Bangalore, Oct 15 (PTI): Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa surrendered before a local court after he was denied bail in two cases of corruption. He was arrested and sent to jail.

Yeddyurappa, the Bharatiya Janata Party's first chief minister in south India, quit in July over graft charges. He was jailed after a trial court rejected his bail plea in two cases of corruption and ordered his arrest.

He has been sent to Judicial custody till October 22.

DYSP Lokayukta Abdul Wahab

Yeddyurappa, who was largely responsible for bringing the BJP to power in the state, was taken to Bangalore's main jail at Parappana Agrahara in eastern part of the city late Saturday afternoon.

In the jail, Yeddyurappa will have the company of his former ministerial colleagues Katta Subramanaya Naidu and S.N. Krishnaiah Shetty.

Shetty was also arrested Saturday as his bail plea in the two cases was rejected.

High drama, confusion and speculation on whereabouts of former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa unfolded here Saturday as police arrived at his residence to arrest him in two graft cases, but did not find him there.

Scores of media personnel from both print and electronic media, police personnel and curious onlookers gathered outside Yeddyurappa’s residence on Race Course Road in city centre since morning as court verdict on his bail plea was to come Saturday.

He sought exemption from personal appearance on the ground that he was suffering from back pain.

Almost three hours after Rao directed Yeddyurappa’s arrest, police reached the Race Course Road house with the arrest warrant.

Within minutes, word spread that they did not find Yeddyurappa at the place, flummoxing the media horde which had camped outside.

A speculation was Yeddyurappa was seeking time in the hope of moving the high court to seek stay on the arrest warrant issued by the Lokayukta special court.

Earlier today, a Lokayukta court rejected Yeddyurappa's bail plea and issued arrest warrant against him in two cases relating to alleged land scams.

Another accused, former minister S N Krishnaiah Shetty, was sent to judicial custody till October 22 by Lokayukta special judge N K Sudhindra Rao, who granted relief to Yeddyurappa's sons, B Y Raghavendra, MP, and B Y Vijendra as also his son-in-law Sohan Kumar and BJP MLA Hemachandra Sagar and ten others.

Reading out his order in a packed court, the judge said he has rejected the bail pleas of Yeddyurappa and Setty but allowed those of 14 others.

This is the first time in Karnataka's history that a former chief minister has been issued an arrest warrant.

Krishnaiah Shetty collapses in court

The court also rejected the applications moved by Yeddyurappa seeking exemption from personal appearance on grounds that he was suffering from severe back pain and unable to take the stairs.

The court verdict comes as an embarrassment to the BJP especially when BJP President L K Advani is on a nationwide yatra to highlight alleged corruption in the UPA government.

Yeddyurappa and others have been named as accused in two private complaints filed by advocate Sirajin Basha for alleged irregularities in denotification of lands.

Yeddyurappa's family members were directed to furnish a bond for Rs five lakh and Rs 10 lakh as surety in the two cases for their bail and also submit to the court chartered accountant certified copies of the bank accounts of Davalagiri Properties and Adarsh Homes Pvt Limited owned by them.

The court directed the remaining accused enlarged on bail to furnish a bond for Rs five lakh and slapped conditions that they should not tamper with evidence and not make any attempt to flee the country.

Shetty collapsed as the court pronounced the order, while Yeddyurappa skipped the proceedings citing health reasons.

Seeing Shetty's condition, the judge directed officials to provide proper treatment before taking him to jail.

Yeddyurappa, who steered the party to victory to install the first BJP government in the south, quit as chief minister after being indicted by Lokayukta report on illegal mining in July.

Minutes after learning about the court order, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda cancelled his trip to Mumbai and was closetted with some of his ministerial colleagues, including Home Minister R Ashoka.

Basha has alleged Yeddyurappa denotified lands in Arakere, Agara, Devarachikkanahalli, Geddalahalli in favour of the accused causing huge losses to the state exchequer.

Ravi B Naik, Yeddyurappa's counsel said, the former chief minister would challenge the Lokayukta court order in the High Court. Yeddyurappa would also seek bail from the High Court.

Naik said Yeddyurappa would surrender before the Lokayukta court if the High Court asks him to do so.

The chief minister also summoned City Police Commissioner Jyoti Prakash Mirji and state's Intelligence wing chief Gopal Hosur for discussions.

People gathered in large number outside Yeddyurappa's Race Course residence as a police team entered with the arrest warrant. (With IANS inputs)

Mr.Bulsam, Mangalore,Tauseef, Mangalore, what you mentioned is absolutely right.. as compared to Madhu Koda chief minister of Jharkand is just nothing!!

Madhu Koda charged with laundering money...more than 6000 crores owned in illegal assets..these assets were reported to include hotels and three companies in Mumbai..property in Kolkata..a hotel in Thailand.. and a coal mine in Liberia. This alleged scam is said to be the second-largest scam uncovered in India in 2009 and gets his name included in the list of controversial Indian businessman like Hasan Ali Khan and Harshad Mehta!! Madhu Koda involved with D-gang..and was part of a corrupt network of congress party who stole money from Jharkhand...On that period where is UPA government..sleeping or what while garbing so big wealth of nation??? Mr.Yeddy is no where stand as compare to in front of UPA scams..

I don't think so why you people are so happy..after all congress people are also our brother as well as BJP!!..one or other day will merge to become a strong party..minus sonia/rahul!!

samjhe kya na samjahe tauseef..your people in pakistan treated you as 'mohjirs'..just thank god you are living in India in the midst of us!!

Very well said olwin pereira, mississauga. I liked the way you have interepreated Sonia Gandhi's status in India. One should appreciate her in the way that she has carried out her role as a Bahu initially, a mother to her Indian husband's children, whom she has brought up in Indian way, and as a leader of her Khandan's political party after both her Mom-in-law and husband died. She deserves an award/reward for her multi facetted roles, than accusing her as Italian born. People should appreciate her as a person rather than ridiculing her past nationality. Of course they are not getting any reason to blame her, than that.

I dont understand why people call Mrs. Sonia Gandhi an Italian and she belongs outside India !! she has not come from back door enrty (like most Indians in christian west) she has come as a bahu for the most prestigious Indian family . Indian culture respects bahus more than the daughters are we just proclaiming our religion or practising it ?? close to 4 lakh Indians settle by back door policy or immigration to the christian west and europe and north america ( off late they have started latin america too)after couple of years if any body calls them Indian it is a big crime in those so called christain countries !! common hunger takes Indians to migrate Mrs. Sonia came as a bahu not looking for food and shelter !!
She wears sari but punjabis wear turban when they are policing canadian and american streets , many kids carry kirpan to school canadian parliment has 2 turban sikhs !! are allowed as humans because of these countries constitution is based on Bible..
till today in Indai we see , deal and interact people based on religion when will we see people as human beings first ??

All corrupt politicians irrespective of whether they belong to Congress, BJP or any other party should be shown their ultimate place. Finally the maximum fingers point to us voters for giving power to these looters. BS-Y is in trouble for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore land scam. Documents show that BS-Y bent every rule in the book, only to ensure allotment of land for his sons and other family members. BS-Y’s eldest son Raghavendra is the biggest beneficiary in the land-for-fly-scheme playing out in Karnataka. BDA rules say if Raghu or his family own property in B’lore then he is not eligible but documents clearly show that Raghu has lied in an affidavit saying he owns no other property in B’lore. He forgot that he already owns a mansion at Manyata in B’lore.

In another case BS-Y denotified land acquired by the BDA in KR Puram to favour his sons and son-in-law Sohan Kumar. BS-Y is also accused of favouring his daughter Umadevi in setting up a BPO. She got two acres of land on the outskirts of B’lore. There are also allegations of the family members getting over 5 acres of land in their home town Shimoga for a hospital and 2 acres for a factory in B’lore.
Another 11 acres denotified in favour of his sons in March this year are now worth Rs 181 crore. Interestingly, most of these revelations are coming from Kumaraswamy, who was the CM when BS-Y was his deputy. They both have violated every rule.
Every time the BDA advised against denotification of some land because it was against the law, BS-Y immediately called for the file to his office. Order after order by BS-Y’s secretary gave only one direction to the Urban Dev Dept -'please just post the file to the CM's office'.

Now coming to Congress, all those involved in corruption has to go through the same fate one day or the other. If what you have written about Sonia Gandhi is true and if she is corrupt she will have to go through the same what Yedyurappa is going through.

I am not a supporter of any political party. I welcome Yeddi's arrest. But there are big fraudsters than Yeddi in other two political parties JDS and Congress. Hope their scams will also come to light in coming days and will be sent to Parappana Agrahara jail.

Special thanks to Respected Mr Santhosh Hegde. He made a commendable job to the people of state. Hope our next Lakayukta Judge will be of his calibre.

    Jai Karnataka

SHAMELESS PERSON SEE HOW HE SURRENDERED SO THAT IT WOULD BE EMBARRASING FOR HIM IF HE GOT ARRESTED. YEDDY THINKS HE DID A GREAT JOB BY SURRENDERING. IF HE DID NOT DO IT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DRAGGED,HANDCUFFED AND TAKEN TO JAIL IN PROCESSION. THIS IS OUR EX-CM. HIS ARREST SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE EARLIER AND THEY SHOULD HAVE NOT GIVEN A CHANCE TO SURRENDER. "NANU JAGGUDILLA" YEDDY WAS ALWAYS SAYING."I AM READY TO GO TO JAIL". THIS WAS HIS DIALOGUE ALWAYS. NOW WHY HE NEEDS BAIL? BEFORE GETTING ARRESTED HE IS ASKING FOR BAIL. WHEN HE LOOTED, HE LOOTED KARNATAKA LANDS AS IT WAS HIS FATHER'S PROPERTY. HE THOUGHT HE COULD DO ANYTHING AS THE CM. YEDDY SHOULD BE KEPT IN JAIL ATLEAST FOR SIX MONTHS FOR THE "KARMA" HE DID IN LOOTING LANDS WITH HIS FAMILY MEMBERS. NOW WHERE IS SUSHMA,JAITLEY,NAIDU AND RAJNATH WHO ARE BARKING ABOUT UPA AND PM CORRUPTION. NOW ALL ARE QUIET LIKE RATS. NO ONE HAS GOT GUTS TO TALK OR COMMENT AGAINST YEDDY'S ARREST AS BJP CENTRAL LEADERS ARE HIJDAS AND SPINELESS PEOPLE. ADVANI SHOULD STOP HIS RATH YATRA IF HE HAS ANY SHAME. NOW HIS OWN EX-CM IS BEHIND BARS. WHAT CORRUPTION HE WILL TALK ABOUT. PEOPLE SHOULD STONE ADVANI. NAGESH MAMOO MAY BE VERY HAPPY TODAY AS HIS LEADER YEDDY IS ARRESTED AND IS IN JAIL. CONGRATS TO NAGESH MAMOO. NOW HE WILL BLAME CONGRESS AND UPA FOR THE ARREST OF YEDDY.

Mr. Vishal, Only RSS members are patented to be Patriot. you never dare to claim that you are an patriotic, you all are pseudo congis. It is game plan of Italian madam. she used Indian Lokayokta, Justice Santosh Hegde to defame the RSS and the great Leader of Karnataka Mr. YEDYOORAPPA. (Nagesh mama is not around so I...)

Yeddyurappa is a man for committment. Few months back he apealed to the Governor of Karnataka to release 171 prisoners if not he will join them. Governor overturned his plea. Now Yeddyurappa himself proved that he keeps his words.

According to latest TV news, the folks have ensured that Yeddi (#9118) gets the best possible treatment in the D-Block at Prappana Agrahara, with the cell having TV, newspapers, attached bathroom and toilet, special food and facilities that are considered many times better than the tihar jail. There are already reports that Puttaswamy, Renukacharaya and Nandish Reddy had ensured in advance that Yeddi will continue to be in touch with his colleagues who are still in power, through multiple mobile phones! The state police had even facilitated multiple Bolero jeeps to avoid the press and media coverage of the CM in handcuffs although for just a few minutes.

When he had power...He acted as if he is superior than all human beings...He tried to take Law into his hands...Today ...TRUTH has put him in his place (behind bars).

He dreamt of having richness.... over night, now he is crying for his own fate...
Let Mr. Advani stop his YATRA & take classes to teach some good lessons about polytricks to his collegues - how to talk, act, rule....

This is the sadest day in the history of BJP in karntaka...If you dont know how to hid your crime, why are you committing it???? Not at all a good politician... Politicians are experts in committing fraud and hiding it.. But this poor Yeddi, did a mistake but didnt know how to cover it up....When NDA returns to power, they too shall do the same thing in congress ruled states like what UPA is doing in BJP/NDA ruled states... Revenge politics is not good for our country... This is not democracy but its vengencecracy...

Mr.Yeddyurapp sent to judicial custody..this news is a relief to Congress, but a BIG RELIEF to BJP ! Mr.Yeddi made everyones life miserable when he was CM. At one point he HIJACKED BJP high command in Delhi ! Even, when he stepped down from CM post,he ordered that he would become CM within 6 months! He thought that he is the ultimate in BJP. Mr.Sadanand Gowda has been advised by BJP high command not to listen to Yeddi any more. Mr.Gowda agreed without any comment even though he became CM because of Yeddi.Former CM,Yeddyurappa who was main pillar in building BJP in Karnataka has thrown the crown which people gifted him. Now no sympathy from inside and outside for his arrest. What a destiny ! Hope same law will be applied to Kumara Swamy..Yes..Congress people have not come from heaven ! Let ther be very fair trial. God Bless India.

Its not about Yeddi. We would have felt the same happiness had it been any other minister..be it from Congress, BJP, RJD or any other bloody party.

Its all about the corrupt being arrested. Its all about our belief in Law. This ensures that Law in India prevails. Though many highly influenced murderers and thugs roam scot free everyday, one day will come when they too will be arrested. Sab ka number aayega mamu!!

Yeddy couldn't fulfill his dream of development!, & building Hightech Jails to send all the opposition leaders as permanent residents!
With them he could've shared very exciting banter & happy stay for a long long time.
Anna didn't say Jail baro- still yeddy initiated it on his own.
The First CM in South from BJP to win on his own-
The first CM to go to jail in South as well as whole India on his own!?

This parasite should rot in jail for the rest of his life so that it serves as an eye-opener to all politicians who come to public life with the intention of looting the people's money. I sincerely hope and pray that more rogues of his kind are arrested for all their wrong doings. There are plenty of them all around us.
