Bhatkal, Aug 10: "I have stood by the people as MLA of Bhatkal Vidhana sabha constituency for the last four years during the Honnavar floods, corona pandemic and the current heavy rains. I have provided all the possible help with the cooperation of BJP activists," said Honnavar Vidhana Sabha constituency MLA Sunil Naika.

Speaking to media persons at the guest house on Tuesday, August 10, he said that his term was challenging.

"The cloud burst on August 2 for three hours was devastating. Water entered more than 4,000 houses. Four people of a family at Mutalli died as the hill caved in. I got the mud vacated by JCB and Hitachi at 7 am, retrieved four bodies by 1 pm and performed their final rites at 4 pm. A compensation of Rs 5 lacs each was paid to the families of the victims," he said.

"A sum of Rs 10,000 each was distributed to 3,890 families out of 4,483 houses where rainwater had entered. A total of 365 shops where the water entered were paid compensation. Distribution of compensation for the damaged 36 boats, 107 nets and other goods is in progress. I will help if I am contacted during calamities," he said.

"I congratulate the chief minister, district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, other leaders, activists, district administration and elected representatives," he said.

Victims of rain damages will be paid extra compensation after submitting a report to the chief minister, he said.

Local BJP leaders were also present.
