Goa Congress Chief's Brother Accused of Holi Assault

Panaji, March 23 (IANS) A 50-year-old woman and her son Wednesday accused the brother of Congress' Goa unit president Subhash Shirodkar of assaulting them after they resisted colours being smeared on their faces during Holi celebrations Sunday. Shirodkar said the complaint was politically motivated.

Supriya Madgaonlar, who along with her son Rohan, was allegedly assaulted on her back and hands, on Holi at Ponda, 35 kms from here, also said that the police were not taking action against the accused Meghashyam Shirodkar.

"Meghashyam and several other persons were forcefully trying to smear Holi colours our faces. When we resisted, they tried to drag us out of our car and beat us up with their fists and car wipers," Supriya told a press conference at the state assembly complex.

Supriya also said that the police were not investigating the case for several days, because the accused was the brother of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Subhash Shirodkar.

Shirodkar dismissed the complaint.

"There was a mob of 60 or 70 there, how can they say it was my brother who assaulted them?" Shirodkar told IANS.

"I am not trying to shield my brother, but the complainants could be politically motivated," he said.
