Japan Quake: 9,300 Dead, 13,786 Missing


Tokyo, March 23 (IANS) The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan March 11 have left 9,301 people dead, while at least 13,786 were still unaccounted for till Wednesday morning, Xinhua reported citing the National Police Agency.

The magnitude-9 earthquake hit the Pacific coastal areas of northeast Japan, triggering an enormous tsunami that led to explosions in the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Radioactive substances above the safe limit have been detected in 11 types of vegetables grown in Fukushima prefecture, Kyodo News reported Wednesday.

The vegetables include broccoli, cabbage, spinach and the locally-grown "komatsuna" leafy vegetable, the health ministry said.
