Goa to Sign MoU for Garbage Treatment

Panaji, Mar 19 (IANS): Goa wants to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Mumbai-based Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to use its technology to solve the state's burgeoning garbage woes.

"BARC has developed a state of the art technology for treatment of garbage, preservation of fruits and food grains," Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said in his budget speech Thursday.

"There are also various other technologies developed by them which are of use to mankind. I propose to sign a MoU with BARC for technology transfer to the state of Goa," the chief minister said.

Dearth of a proper garbage disposal mechanism in face of escalating tourism activities has been Goa's scourge for the last decade.

The state government has been unable to even narrow down on a suitable site for disposal of garbage due to public resistance to the crude open pit dumping system still practiced in Goa.
