Udupi, Jun 27: Councillors complained against the potholes, unscientific service roads, bad drainage system, and irregular electricity supply at the City Municipality council meeting held at Satyamurthy auditorium here on Monday, June 27.

Sumithra Nayak, president, CMC raised the problem of Parkala Road with NHAI. She said the current national highway road is in bad shape due to heavy rainfall. She said riders ran the risk of falling down as the roads are bumpy following the caving in of roads due to the laying of Varahi water pipes.

She said rainwater was flowing on the highway instead of the drainage. She pointed out Parkala is the only connecting road to Manipal and with the roads in such a pathetic condition many accidents are occurring.

She warned the engineer to speed up the work and look after the safety of the public.

Ashok Naik, 20th Indrali ward councillor raised the issue of Indrali railway bridge on NH 169. He said the contractor had stopped the construction work. Now, during monsoon season commuters and children are facing a lot of problems while crossing the road. He said the completion of the bridge construction should be treated as an emergency solution.

Manjunath Nayak, PWD engineer said that, “Civil works have been completed. But as per the extended plan, a girder is awaited to be pressed into service. The length of the girder needs to be expanded to 58 meters for which the quantity of steel should be doubled. The bridge requires 138 tons to 490 tons of steel. Construction work will begin once the stocks arrive. Concrete work on one side of the road is still pending and for that we need to block the highway.”

Girish Anchan said that, “There is no proper drainage or channel for free flow of rainwater as a result of which two-wheeler riders lose control over their vehicles during the rainy season resulting in a likelihood of accident.

Ramesh Kanchan said the condition of the Adi-Udupi-Malpe Road had worsened and public was facing problem due to the pathetic condition of the road.

Answering to Kanchan’s remarks, engineer Manjunath Nayak said, “Tenders have been opened yesterday. It takes 15 days for the technical evaluation to be completed.”

Sundar J Kalmady, councillor from Kalmady ward demanded that the ward roads be developed while expressing disappointment over the delay in execution of work.

Engineer Manjunath said, “The 3D document is ready and has been submitted to Kundapura AC who is scrutinising it.”

Uday Shetty, commissioner, CMC and Lakshmi Manjunath were present.
