Congress Hints at Power Sharing in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, March 15 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Congress president K.V. Thangkabalu Tuesday hinted his party might want a share in power if the ruling DMK-led alliance wins the coming assembly elections.

After releasing the list of 63 constituencies where the Congress would contest, he said: "The DMK-led alliance is a formidable force and it would win the elections.

"(DMK chief M.) Karunanidhi will become the chief minister again. Once the alliance wins, the aspirations of the Congress workers would be met."

Thangkabalu declined to say whether that comment meant the Congress would want a share in the government although party activists in Tamil Nadu have always felt that way.

The Congress has supported the DMK government since 2006.

As per the list of constituencies, the Congress would have its candidates across the state except in two districts - Dharmapuri and Theni.

According to him, these two districts are allotted to alliance partners. The party has got most of the constituencies it had sought.

The Congress will start accepting applications from aspiring candidates from Wednesday.

"The application fee for a general constituency is Rs.5,000 and for a reserved constituency Rs.2,500. The fee for women aspirants is Rs.2,500," he said.

The final seat line-up for the DMK-led alliance: DMK 120 seats, Congress 63, PMK 30, KMK 7, MMK 1, VCK 10, IUML 2 and a Nadar party (1).
