Panaji, Mar 12 (IANS): Goa's capital city is set to light up with six internationally acclaimed lighting designers exhibiting their talents in Panaji's six public spaces as part of a unique illumination project.
Organised for the first time outside Europe, the architectural lighting design workshop project is part of "Lights in Goa" programme, according to organisers.
The project is an attempt to showcase how professionally designed lighting installations can add value to urban spaces and transform them into pockets of social activity with revenue generating potential, an official said Friday.
The "Lights in Goa" is organised by the Institute of Indian Interior Designers - Goa Regional Centre (IIID-GRC) in association with the Professional Lighting Designers Association (PLDA) in Germany.
"This is the first time that an international architectural lighting design workshop is being organised by PLDA outside Europe. We are extremely happy that this year it's being held in Goa," Kapil Surlakar, technical head of "Lights in Goa" told reporters here.
"Public spaces like gardens and parks are perceived to be unsafe after dark. The perception can change with smart and intelligent illumination of such sites. This can also aid economic activity and enhance the urban fabric of the society," he said.
The five-day event starting March 16 will also see eight international lighting designers sharing their experiences and thoughts on how urban spots aided by smart illumination can aid in economic activity while also beautifying it.
Lighting designers Kevan Shaw, Martin Lupton and Anne Militello from Britain, Christopher Mok from Hong Kong, Annetrin Jytte Basler from Australia and Tapio Rosenius from Finland will be working with a team of professionals and students.
A picturesque river jetty, the Francisco Gomes Luis Gardens, the Kala Academy promenade, Mahavir Garden, the Children's Park and the ESG Building have been chosen to be a part of this project.
"This illumination workshop will serve as a model for adopting lighting and development strategies for public spaces all over the country as well as in other participating countries," James Andrade, director of James Electricals and vice chairman of IIID-Goa, said.
