Udupi: Lombard Nursing College’s new block inaugurated, centenary celebrations held

Udupi, June 15: The New Block of the Lombard Nursing College was inaugurated by Vinay Hegde, chancellor, NITTE Deemed to be University and chairman of NITTE Education Trust on the occasion of its centenary celebration of the hospital on Wednesday, June 15.

In his inaugural address, Vinay Hegde said, "The Lombard institution has been doing great work. We cannot run a charitable hospital unless having a medical college backup. This is very essential in today's circumstances not just focussing on making money. Money must come from the institution itself in providing infrastructures. The hospital has such a reputation. There are many issues in medical colleges like lack of infrastructure, experienced teaching faculties. Today people will not believe in myth, but on quality education and succeed in profession. Planning has to be done meticulously to achieve future projects." He wished all the best for the institution.

Fr Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of the Udupi Catholic diocese in his blessings said, "The Lombard mission hospital which was started with just six beds in a small building is now managing all the major specialities. This day should be written in golden words in the history of hospital. Everyone realized the importance health during the pandemic. Health issues comes in different ways. There is a need to upgrade the quality of health service." He wished, God may bless to completing the future projects. "There is no meaning in increasing hospitals, but reducing patients' rate is very important. Taking preventive measure is more important than curing," he said.

The distinguished chief guest of the occasion Kurma Rao, deputy commissioner released booklet on the history of Lombard hospital. "Lombardo is completing 100 years. It is not easy to get public confidence. This is a model work done by hospital," he said.

Dr Sushil Jathanna, director, Mission hospital Udupi, presided over the programme.

In his presidential address, Dr Jathanna said, "We had started health service in a small space in June 15, 1923, founded by Dr Eva Lombard. This was the first mother and child focused unit in Coastal region. Now it includes all major units and providing best services with experienced staff.

He further said that, "We have three future projects, that developing into a super specialty hospital, expanding its educational base with more courses in nursing and allied health sciences with a establishing a fully fledged medical college and offering more community-based services like a Palliative Care Centre, Home care services and Outreach Clinics in the rural areas of Udupi. Let us work hand in hand obtaining future aims," Jathanna added.

Sr Sujatha, vice president, Karnataka Southern Diocese, William Carey, secretary, KSD, Vincent Palanna, treasurer, KSD, Stanley Karkada, Christian Medical and Educational Followship trust, Ramesh Kanchan, councillor, 76 Badagubettu, Mohammed Maula, businessman, Subhas Soans, Shabhi Khazi, Jamiyathullah Fhalada, Dr Prema Kunder, retired Gynaecologist, Dr Deepa Rao, gynaecologist and others were present.

The formal stage function began with invocation by nursing students. Ivan D Soans offered prayer. Dr Suja Karkada, the principal, Lombard College of Nursing welcomed the gathering. Dean Prabhavathi proposed vote of thanks.
