Customs foil smuggling bid at Chennai Airport, arrest passenger


Chennai, Jun 8 (IANS): The Customs wing of the Chennai International Airport foiled a smuggling bid by a passenger who arrived on an Emirates flight in the early morning of Wednesday.

The passenger had concealed Gold as foils and bits in four refurbished phones and it was worth Rs 30 lakh, Customs officials told IANS.

The passenger Mohammed Kasim of Chepauk, Chennai landed in the early hours of Wednesday from Dubai and was intercepted by the Customs officials. However on frisking him, nothing was found, but the customs officials on close examination of the electronic gadgets in his person found that four phones were refurbished and when it was opened, gold foils and bits of gold were found concealed in the phones.

The passenger was also carrying laptops, IPads and Iphones that were brought in without paying duty. These items were seized and he was charged for them also.

Mohammed Kasim was arrested under the Customs Act.
