Kolar, May 2: Tomato price has shot up suddenly and has brought smiles on the face of growers. They were distraught since four or five months as there was no demand. Now traders from other states are coming to market in Kolar to buy tomatoes.

Kolar district is renowned for Tomato crop. But due to sudden rain and other factors there was no demand. Many growers had destroyed the crop also. Now 15 kg box is being sold at Rs 400 to 800 at APMC market.

Now the farmers are paying attention in protecting the crop. They are spraying insecticides and putting nets to prevent the crop from decaying.

A farmer of Budikote says, “I had invested lac of rupees on three acres of land to grow tomato crop and recover the loss I incurred in the previous three to four crops. The yield was good but the recent hailstone rain destroyed much of the crop. Now due to sudden rise of prices I could recover half of my investment.”

Shiva Reddy, senior assistant director, horticulture department says, “Many farmers did not show interest in tomato crop as they lost money in previous three to four crops due to rain and other reasons. Now demand has come from outstation states. Supply is less and demand is more so that price is on the higher side.”
