Udupi: Prevention better than cure for dengue, malaria diseases - DC Kurma Rao

Udupi, Apr 13: Deputy Commissioner M Kurma Rao on Wednesday said it is necessary to take necessary precaution to prevent the diseases and that it is better than cure after contracting the disease.

Presiding over the district-level dengue and malaria coordination committee meeting here at the Dr V S Acharya Hall in Zilla Panchayat he said monsoons brings with them a greater risk and possibility of outbreak of diseases due to stagnation of rainwater spread at many places which becomes breeding ground for mosquitoes causing a likely fear of outbreak of diseases like dengue and malaria diseases.

The deputy commissioner said it is necessary for all non-governmental and private organisations to work with health department to contain the growth of mosquitoes adding that it is necessary to create an awareness among the public regarding the same.

Kurma Rao said the roofs of the multi-storeyed buildings had become breeding ground for mosquitoes. He urged members of the town municipal council, grama panchayat and city municipal council to work with the health department and direct the concerned officials to take suitable action to prevent outbreak of epidemic diseases.

He said it has become necessary for all the members to go on a door-to-door drive to create awareness and educate the citizens regarding controlling mosquitoes.

He said workers and fishermen who were engaged in labour work and fishing were coming from other states for tourism purpose which is also a threat for diseases to spread. He said it is necessary to take precautions.

Kurma Rao said it is possible to cure diseases like dengue, malaria and such other diseases as they have common symptoms which could be identified, treated and prevented from spreading.

He said Kollur reported many cases of dengue and malaria last year.
