Mangaluru, Mar 25: Houses which were being illegally built on government land worth crores of rupees which were coming up in a site reserved for the victims of sea erosion in Ullal were demolished by the officials of Ullal city municipality on Wednesday.

Backhoe was used to bring down the structures located at Madyar Sainagar within Kotekar town panchayat. Ullal municipal chief officer Rayappa, led the operation which was executed at about 5.30 am.

A 1.42-acre land had been earmarked for being allotted to sea erosion victims from Ullal but it was said that the land was vested with influential builders later. This land is registered in the name of Ullal municipality.

In the case of two houses under construction, the municipality stopped the work, took possession of the buildings and locked the gates. Boards which announced that these properties belong to Ullal municipality were hung. It is said that district deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra, has sought a detailed report on how houses were built on government land, why Ullal municipal officials remained quiet, how electricity connection was given and on what basis Kotekar town panchayat issued door numbers to illegal houses.

The police, on the basis of complaint made by Ullal municipal chief officer, registered a first information report against the builder concerned.
