US Recalls 26/11 Dead, to Combat Terror with India

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) Remembering those who had died in the Mumbai terror attack, the US said Thursday it would "continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with India" in combating terrorism.

"On the anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack, we honour the memory of the victims and their families. As Americans died and grieved with you on 26/11, today we join you in remembrance," US ambassador Timothy J. Roemer said on the eve of the second anniversary of the Nov 26-28 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans.

"We will never forget the heartbreaking images of 26/11, nor will we forget the heroics of the many men and women who risked their lives to save others," Roemer said.

Recalling the tribute of US President Barack Obama to Mumbai as a symbol of the incredible optimism and energy that defines India in the 21st century, the envoy said: "Today the US and India are working together more closely than ever to keep our respective people safe.

"As global partners, we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with India to fight terrorism and remain united in our determination to give our people a future of security, dignity, and opportunity," he said.

The envoy pointed out that India and the US were expanding their counter-terror collaboration in new areas such as maritime security, forensics training and megacity policing.
