Bihar Verdict is for Development, says Nitish

Patna, Nov 24 (IANS) Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said Wednesday that the sweeping victory of his alliance was a vote for Bihar's continued development.

"This is a victory for the people of Bihar," Nitish Kumar said in his first reaction after his Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) crushed the opposition in assembly elections.

"The people had a clear choice: do they want development or do they want Bihar to return to its old days...

"The people have decided... we want development. Development has won in Bihar," Nitish Kumar said in his usual soft tone.

Nitish Kumar promised to work hard for the next five years too.

"We will work in the same way, probably we will work harder...I can give one promise. I will not hesitate to work hard."

JD-U and BJP Sweep Bihar, RJD and Congress Humiliated

By Imran Khan

Patna, Nov 24 (IANS) Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was Wednesday poised to lead his Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and its ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to an emphatic win in the assembly elections, crushing long-time foe Lalu Prasad and wiping out the Congress in one of India's most populous states.

Reaping the harvest of his widely-hailed development plank of the past five years, trends indicated that the ruling combine would sweep 199 of the 243 seats in the assembly, stunning friends and foes alike.

While a shocked former chief minister Lalu Prasad remained shuttered at his home, a bruised Congress congratulated the chief minister and pledged to introspect after indications that it would win only seven seats -- less than the nine it had in the outgoing assembly.

BJP leader Arun Jaitley called the verdict a victory for "meritorious leadership over dynastic politics" -- referring to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi who campaigned extensively in the state calling Nitish Kumar a failed chief minister.

Wild celebrations erupted in the offices of the JD-U and BJP both in the state capital Patna and in New Delhi. Party activists burst crackers, beat drums and danced to victory songs.

Although both the JD-U and BJP, who have been aligned since 1996, made substantial gains over their 2005 strength, leaders of both credited the win largely to the charisma of Nitish Kumar, whose past is rooted in the country's now virtually defunct socialist movement.

The ruling alliance made substantial gains all across the state, decimating Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan even in some of its known bastions.

The RJD and LJP, which had vowed to unseat Nitish Kumar, were likely to end up with about 30 seats, dealing Lalu Prasad and Paswan -- who until a few years ago were considered kingmakers in national politics -- a terrible blow.

With officials starting the counting of an estimated 28 million votes polled from Oct 21 to Nov 20 at 8 a.m. across 42 centres Wednesday, Nitish Kumar got an undisguised thumbs-up.

In the process, some of the RJD and LJP stalwarts were routed. Even RJD star and former chief minister Rabri Devi, Lalu Prasad's wife, was trailing in both the constituencies she contested.

"We are happy and celebrating," BJP leader Sanjay Jha told IANS in Patna. Added his colleague Giriraj Singh: "Nitishji will be the chief minister again."

BJP's most prominent Muslim face, Shahnawaz Hussain, said the people had embraced the development programmes of Nitish Kumar and his own party. These included building an extensive network of roads and bridges in the state where none existed, strengthening the state's educational and health sectors, and providing various incentives to the disadvantaged.

"It is clear that people have voted for development and not for caste," Hussain, a former central cabinet minister, said. He added that the result would prove to be a watershed in Indian politics.

In New Delhi, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said: "People voted for an alliance that brought development as well as law and order to Bihar."

He said the loser was RJD's "15 years of jungle raj" - referring to the long rule of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi.

Lalu Prasad's residence in the heart of Patna was deserted, its green gates firmly shut. Barring a handful of party leaders who quietly entered the house, the only people camping outside were journalists.

A dejected Congress meekly capitulated.

"We would like to congratulate Nitish Kumar," party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said in New Delhi.

She said the Congress would analyse what went wrong with its election strategy in Bihar, where the party has steadily lost influence over the last few decades.

One Congress leader, who did not want to be identified, admitted that Rahul Gandhi had not clicked in Bihar. "Rahul failed to attract voters," he said.

After the end of the sixth round of voting Saturday, exit polls predicted a sweep for the JD-U and BJP, which took office in 2005. At that time, Lalu Prasad had rubbished the exit polls.

NDA takes Massive Lead in Bihar Polls

Patna, Nov 24: Nitish Kumar led JD(U)-BJP alliance has taken massive lead over Lalu Prasad's RJD and is headed for a two-thirds majority in the Bihar Assembly elections 2010.

The counting started at 8 AM on Wednesday amidst tight security arrangements for all 243 constituencies.

Among JD(U) ministers leading were Vijendra Yadav (Supaul), Narendra Narain Yadav JD(U) (Alamgarh), Ram Parvesh Rai (Barauli) and Hari Prasad Sah (Laukaha).

Nitish Kumar's alliance heads for victory in Bihar

Patna, Nov 24, (IANS): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's ruling alliance seemed headed for victory in assembly elections, with its candidates far ahead in 65 of the 89 seats where early trends were available.

Exit polls have predicted a clear win for Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which took office in 2005.

The main opposition combine of Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) were a poor second across the state.

Election officials said the RJD and LJP appeared to be performing poorly even in some of their known strongholds.

The BJP said in New Delhi that the ruling alliance was poised for an emphatic win.

"The JD-U and BJP are headed for a historic victory," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said in New Delhi. "People are voting for an alliance that brought development as well as law and order to Bihar."

He said the people had clearly voted against the RJD's "15 years of jungle raj" - referring to the long rule of Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi.

Candidates of the Congress, a party which in recent decades has become an also-ran in Bihar, were ahead in three seats, the officials said.

Former chief minister Rabri Devi was trailing in one of the two constituencies from where she contested.

More than half of over 55 million electorate in Bihar voted from Oct 21 and Nov 20 to elect a new 243-member assembly.

Nithish has proved how non corrupt rule can change the nation as well as the voters,I think Congress has misused power for many years now,its high time for people to think of an alternate in the centre,as congress men are busy in grossing up the wealth,by hook or crook, ultimately these looted money is going to some foreign countries as investment as the politicians cannot invest these in India. Our country got money from the hardworking NRI's,whose fate is miserable when we really read the true stories .We wish more leaders like Nithish rule us,its time for the change, one cannot beleive in his 5 years term he has built 8000kms of road, where in Karnataka is still centred at Bangalore,no other region has seen any drastic developments ,imagine the Mangalore-Bangalore road instead of seeng improvements it has gone worst, earlier one could think of reaching Bangalore in at the most 7hrs, where as nowadays u cannot guarantee you will reach even after 10hrs,leaders only can fly the Airways.

I was crazy about cricket matches use to skip school to watch, my mom use to say these cricketers will not feed you, how true?. We watch match which might be already fixed.
Same is political parties, all parties and politicians are corrupt, might be one has done PhD in it by ruling India more than 60 years, but point is all are corrupt, i have no doubt, but I feel petty about people who still has belief in them. I have never voted till now and will only vote if there is option “vote for none”.
I wish instead of people fighting supporting these parties, we should fight for 2 party government. Which should have age limit to politicians, qualification, and strict law against corruption.

Indian politics and system is such a mess, We can’t dream of Ram Raj to be achieved.

They called him in a right way to project Devlopment, to appease voters who would vote for Devlopment then used him him another way to appease some sects who only belive in cast politics & cry geonocide against Modi or have hatred towards him. Very intelligent move by Nitish. Bihar is not Pakisthan that JDU BJP won because of keeping Modi Away. It was just the smart move what they did you balance both type of voters.
