Mangaluru: Waste lying on road, an eyesore for Smart City

Mangaluru, Dec 8: Garbage is found strewn around by the side of the road leading from Maryhill helipad to Land Links Township. The waste disposed of at various spots along this road has proved to be a blot on the reputation of Smart City Mangaluru.

Maryhill with its lush green environs provides an ideal environment for hundreds of people who come here to walk, jog or to exercise. Unknown miscreants have been disposing of waste accumulated in their houses by the roadside here. Antony Waste Handling Cell which collects city garbage does not collect this waste. The waste that is lying here may be about a load or more.

In the past, waste was being thrown all along the main road here. Now, because underground drainage work is going on, and also taking advantage of the place being desolate, people have chosen the Land Links road to throw waste. The garbage is thrown at night and early morning. As street dogs drag this waste to the road and spread terrible stench, moving on this road has been rendered a horrible experience.

Sometime back, members of Joggers Park and Prathvi volunteers had cleared plastic bottles, house waste etc which was about two loads, lying on this road some days back by voluntarily working. Thereafter, the garbage again started accumulating there. Even construction waste is dumped here and it has not yet been reined in.

Waste is also accumulated at the helipad as people come here at night, have liquor and leave bottles and food packets there. The locals have urged the city corporation to do the needful before it turns into a dumpling yard. They have urged the corporation to install CCTV cameras at these spots, identity the culprits and initiate legal action against them.
