Beltangady: Youth washing shamiyana drowns in river

Beltangady, Oct 28: Chandrashekhar (21), a resident of Swastik Nagar, Venoor, drowned in river Phalguni here on Wednesday October 27.

Chandrashekhar, who worked as a coolie in the past, had started working for a shamiyana hiring shop in Venoor for the last about a year. On Wednesday, he went near Phalguni river near the mosque to wash the mat of the shamiyana. On that occasion, he unexpectedly got caught by the strong undercurrent of the river, it is said.

Chandrahshekhar's colleagues, Vikram, Siddique and Ravi, tried their best to rescue Chandrashekhar who was struggling to get out of the water but he did not succeed.

In a joint operation launched by the Venoor police, Beltangady fire brigade and divers from Bantwal with the support of the locals, the body of Chandrashekhar was retrieved. A case was registered in Venoor police station.
