Sullia, Oct 27: Senior judge of Sullia civil court, Somashekhar, and junior judge, Yashwant Kumar, undertook scrutiny about the supply of drinking water to the town having been mixed with sludge.

After observing that water mixed with sediment was being supplied in the town for the last some days, the judges paid a visit to the water treatment plant at Kallamutlu on Tuesday October 26 evening and took the officials of the town panchayat to task for supplying water without purification and also providing sludgy water to the citizens.

Town panchayat chief officer, M R Swamy, and engineer, Shivakumar, explained that it has been found very difficult to supply purified water as the treatment plant is four decades old. They said that proposals sent to the government seeking a new unit have not been sanctioned.

The judges stressed that it is the responsibility of the town panchayat to provide clean drinking water to the residents of the town. They asked the officials to draw up farsighted plan and implement it. They advised the officials to take necessary steps immediately. The judges asked the engineer to subject the water being supplied to the town to tests and submit report thereto. They also sought the details of steps taken to provide clean drinking water to the citizens.

Assistant public prosecutor Janardan, town panchayat members, M Venkappa Gowda, Ummer and others were present.
