Udupi: St Mary’s CBSE School, Kannarpady organizes beach cleaning campaign, street play

Udupi, Oct 1: St Mary’s English Medium School, Kannarpady conducted beach cleaning and awareness campaign in Padukere beach, Malpe on September 30, 2021. More than 150 teaching and non-teaching staff took part in this beach cleanup drive and collected more than 150 kg of plastic wastes.

Around 1.5 km of beach area and surrounding locality was cleaned during the two hours of cleaning drive. The beach cleaning campaign intended to restore the natural beauty of Padukere beach and also to ensure a safe living space for marine life. During the stage program followed by beach cleaning campaign chief guest Vasanthi, the panchayat development officer, Ambalpady village panchayat lauded the cleaning initiative taken up by St Mary’s staff to enhance the beauty of coastal land.

She also stressed the need of raising awareness among the youngsters to develop wise waste management habits. The principal Fr Johnson Sequeira in his introductory remarks said that St Mary’s school family is always committed to fulfill its social responsibilities in the form of ecofriendly initiatives and community welfare activities. He thanked the local authorities and villagers for extending the timely support and guidance.

The correspondent Fr Charles Menezes in his presidential address appealed the villagers to run on the cleanliness campaign and monitor the littering behavior of tourists and visitors. Rohini, the president of Ambalpady Village Panchayat and Anitha, the president of Women’s Forum, Balanjaneya Bhajana Mandir ,Padukere were the guests of honor.

Later St Mary’s teachers’ theatre group under the direction of Vinaya S Suvarna performed a street play depicting the harmful effects of plastic litter. The play spotlighted the irresponsible littering behavior of people and focused on the need of raising public awareness on ecofriendly lifestyle. More than 100 villagers of Padukere village witnessed the programme.

Vice principal Rita Quadros proposed the vote of thanks and coordinated the beach cleaning campaign. Teachers’ choir presented a wishing song. Umashree anchored the programme. Assistant parish priest of Udupi Church Fr Ashwin Aranha graced the occasion.
