Mangalore, Sep 22: KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, has successfully treated a 54-year male who was admitted to the hospital due to severe breathlessness. He was diagnosed with COVID at a hospital in Honnavar. Despite all efforts by the doctors, his condition was not improving, and with worsening symptoms, he was referred to KMC Hospital, Mangalore, for advanced care. He was attended by Dr Haroon H, consultant - Internal Medicine, Dr Dattatraya Prabhu, intensivist, and the critical care team, who together initiated necessary supportive measures for the patient.
Talking about the case, Dr Haroon H, said, “On arrival, the patient was breathing rapidly and required a high flow of oxygen. He was also suffering from severe COVID pneumonia, which was also treated. He had a very turbulent course of illness with a possible cytokine storm, requiring ventilator support. After constant treatment and monitoring, the patient was successfully taken out of ventilator support but he was facing complications due to COVID and was complaining of difficulty in swallowing.”
Dr Rohit Pai, Consultant – Neurologist, KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, added, “When he complained about the difficulty in swallowing water, we suspected a neuromuscular problem. He was also suffering from COVID-related myasthenia gravis. After initiating the treatment for myasthenia gravis, the patient showed a dramatic improvement in the symptoms. His oxygen requirement slowly decreased. He was able to mobilize and maintain his spo2 (oxygen saturation) with very minimal oxygen.”

Speaking about this, Dr Anand Venugopal, regional chief clinical services and medical superintendent, KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, said “This was a very complicated case with the patient showing very rare complications of COVID, requiring ICU and ventilator support. I would like to appreciate the entire team of doctors and staff for responding very quickly to detect and treat all the complications. The patient was discharged successfully and will be under our constant monitoring for the next few days. Timely referral to the hospital was very crucial in saving the patient and shows us the importance of taking timely treatment for any kind of health complications.”
