Madikeri, Sep 22: A baby elephant, which left the forest region and moved towards the human habitat searching for food, got stuck between roots and rocks and lost its life. The incident happened in Bettattoor village near Madinadu near here.

The decomposed body of the baby elephant was found here. The forest department officials suspect that the animal would have died four days back.

A villager had complained about terrible stench emanating from a private plantation that is not being maintained for quite some time. Forest department officers and staff searched the area and found the carcass of the elephant. Due to rain, the elephant perhaps slipped and got stuck between the roots and rocks, the officials said.

The elephant was about two years old. Post-mortem was performed on the spot.
