Udupi, Sep 21: “Recently Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) organized a protest march against the rape and murder of Civil Defence women police officer Sabia Saifi in Delhi. However, a case was filed in the city police station that SDPI has violated Covid guidelines. The police department is showing discrimination of this nature. SDPI is committed to legal fight against Udupi district police which is violating the right to protest of citizens,” said Bhaskar Prasad, member of state executive committee of SDPI.

Speaking at the press conference that was held in the city on Tuesday, September 21, Prasad said, “Several political parties and organizations have staged protests in Udupi. Covid guidelines were blatantly violated in many political functions. But the police department has not taken action against any party or individual in this connection so far.

“SDPI had organized peaceful protest and march. This march was organized from Board school to the War memorial at Ajjarkad following all Covid guidelines. Verbal permission was obtained from the DySP for 50 to 100 people to gather and hold a protest.

“Once the protest was over, many protesters were taken into custody on the orders of SI of the city police station and CI. They were made to wait in the police station till 11 pm and were let off after filing cases on them. In addition, they have filed a case on the guest who had arrived as a speaker in the protest. The vehicles on which the protesters arrived at the spot were confiscated and fines were slapped on them. This kind of discrimination is showed by Udupi police department.

“After the onset of Covid several religious and other programmes were held by various organizations. The police department did not register a single case on anyone. However, they have registered cases on more than 35 people on sections 107, 109 and 112 IPC and showing their discriminatory attitude. We will fight this legally.”

District SDPI president Mohammed Ilyas, Kaup area president Umanath, state executive member Anand Mithra Roy and chief secretary Majid Ucchila were present.
