Mangaluru: Rape accused found guilty, awarded ten years imprisonment

Mangaluru, Sep 15: The additional sessions and fast track court for cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, after holding a rape accused guilty of the charges, has awarded him rigorous imprisonment and also imposed fine.

The person who was found guilty and sentenced happens to be Naveen (27) from Shibaje in Beltangady taluk. A complaint had been received by Dharmasthala police station on June 27, 2019 alleging that he had raped a girl from his village. The girl had turned pregnant and also gone through abortion.

Judge of the court, Savitri V Bhat, who conducted the hearing and examined the witnesses, found that the charges framed against Naveen had been proved. She imposed seven years of rigorous imprisonment for rape and Rs 5,000 fine, ten years rigorous imprisonment under POCSO Act and fine of Rs 5,000 under different sections of POCSO act.

Special public prosecutor, C Venkataramana Swamy, had appeared in the case on behalf of the prosecution. The then probationary deputy superintendent of police and in-charge circle inspector, Govindaraju B had investigated and filed charge sheet.

Naveen had in the past, raped the elder sister of the aggrieved girl in 2017. She had also become pregnant and a case had been registered against him. The accused was arrested but was released on bail. When on bail, he had married the girl after she attained majority. After the marriage, he stayed in the house of his wife and continued with his earlier habit. He raped the younger sister of his wife many times, as a result of which she too became pregnant. After the case was filed, the police arrested him. The court which heard the case has handed down imprisonment to him.
