Bengaluru, Apr 15: The police fired at and arrested a person accused of murdering an old woman and her son's friend for ornaments and valuables.

Injured Manjunath from Puttenahalli stands admitted into Ambari hospital. Deputy commissioner of police, Harish Pandey, said that the injured is out of danger. Gold ornaments, silver valuables and other things worth lacs of rupees have been seized from his possession.

Mamata Basu (70), and her son's friend, Debabrut Bahera (41) were murdered by Manjunath, who also took away gold, silver and other valuables before fleeing. The police who searched for him, got information that he was hiding at Konanakunte. Manjunath tried to attack the policemen at which inspector, Kishore Kumar, fired in the air as a measure of warning. Even thereafter, Manjunath aggressively moved towards the policemen at which the inspector fired at his leg, injuring him as a consequence. Injured constable Sadiq Pasha, also has undergone treatment for his injuries.

On April 7, Debabrut Bahera had bought cigarettes from a petty shop and his Google Pay app did not work when he tried to transfer the bill amount. Manjunath who was there, paid Rs 12 on his behalf. He saw the costly mobile phone in Bahera's hands and planned to steal it. He then followed Manjunath and noticed by the appearance of the house that the family was rich, and the lady at the home had costly ornaments around her neck.

At night, Manjunath went back to the said house and pressed the calling bell. As soon as Bahera opened the door, he pushed him back and killed him with his knife. He also murdered the woman by slitting her throat and took away gold ornaments, ATM card, mobile phone etc. He also took away the DVR of the CCTV camera at the house. He fled by wearing Bahera's clothes in a stolen motor bike. The police got to know about the murder on April 8 morning. There were no clues as Manjunath had wiped the blood clean and taken away DVR. But based on the motorbike that was stolen and details of criminals recently released, the police came to the conclusion that Manjunath was the murderer.

He said that during the questioning the police came to know about over ten cases of theft, threat to life, etc in which Manjunath was involved. These cases also will be probed, Pandey added.
