Udupi: Informants about people disposing waste at will may be rewarded

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Apr 6: There is bad news for the people who have developed the uncanny habit of throwing garbage in public places with impunity. Henceforth, they need to be doubly careful as there is the possibility of people who send photos of people littering the public places getting rewarded.

During the zilla panchayat meeting held here chaired by its president, Dinakar Babu, on Monday April 5, Divyashree Amin expressed grave concern about egg waste and poultry waste being deposited in the rivers. Zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr Naveen Bhat expressed the view that such people can be fined Rs 5,000 and out of this amount, Rs 1,000 can be disbursed to people who provide information of such acts in the form of photographs. He said that when the garbage collection reaches the minimum level of 80 percent, action can be taken against the guilty.

He said that there are plans to clean up the national highways and beaches in the district and this programme is planned to be started during April end.

On the issue of lack of cleanliness at the Padubidri blue flag beach, he said that the responsibility of cleaning the beaches can be handed over to gram panchayats. He said that the tourism department has to install boards at the rate of one per every ten kms about the beaches. He suggested that sponsorship for the boards can be obtained and their names can be mentioned in the boards.

Standing committee chairman, Pratap Hegde Marali, opined that shopkeepers cannot dispose of poultry waste at will. They can do so only if a specific site is identified for this purpose. Zilla panchayat planning officer, Srinivas Rao, explained about arrangement being made about waste disposal at the panchayat level, adding that training has been provided to panchayat development officers to convert non-vegetarian waste into manure. Rao also said that 14 loads of waste that cannot be recycled has been sent to the cement factory at Kalaburagi.

Babu Shetty and Uday Kotian said that KRDL and minor irrigation department are indulging in irregularities. The chief executive officer said that every work needs to be certified by the panchayat development officer.
