US Wishes Happy Birthday to Suu Kyi, 'Sadly' in House Arrest

Washington, Jun 19 (DPA): The US has sent "warmest wishes" to opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi on her 65th birthday, which the US said "sadly" will be marked by another birthday under house arrest in Myanmar.

"Her enduring struggle for the fundamental right of all people of Burma to live in freedom continues to inspire people the world over," US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said in a statement Friday.

On Friday in the Philippines, democracy activists rallied outside the embassy of Myanmar to call for her release.

The US also urged Myanmar's leaders to "free her, along with her fellow political prisoners, immediately and without condition".

Suu Kyi is the "world's only imprisoned Nobel Laureate," the US noted. It said freeing her would "set the stage for true national reconciliation".
