India Successfully Test Fires Nuclear-capable Prithvi-II

Bhubaneswar, June 18 (IANS) India conducted a successful test of the indigenously developed nuclear capable ballistic missile Prithvi-II off the Orissa coast Friday, an official said.

The missile blasted off from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, about 15 km from Balasore town, and the test went off "successfully", the official said.

The surface-to-surface missile, which has already been inducted into the Indian armed forces, was fired from a mobile launcher at 6.50 a.m. for user-trial by the army.

The medium range missile has a maximum range of 350 km and can carry a pay-load of 500 kg.

Army officials and scientists of the premier Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) witnessed the user-trial of the nuclear-capable missile which was last successfully tested March 27.

The DRDO has developed the tactical surface-to-surface Prithvi ballistic missiles under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
