Naked Russians Corrupt Minds: Goa Congress MP

Panaji, Mar 2: Russian tourists in Morjim, a beach village in north Goa, move around naked on the beach or are scantily clad, Congress MP Shantaram Naik said Sunday after touring the area popular with Russians.

Naik, who went to the village Saturday with state law commission chairman Ramakant Khalap and Congress leaders, said that such bohemianism "besides corrupting minds of locals left a horrifying impression on children".

"The state government has consciously taken a decision not to prescribe any dress code but during my Morjim tour I was told that some Russians move totally naked," Naik has said in a statement.

Naik said he received several complaints that Russians abused the locals on some pretext or the other.

"Russians are plying motorcycle taxis depriving local pilots of their livelihood, besides violating FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) and Motor Vehicles Act," Naik said.

Naik also said that several Russians were operating restaurants and other eateries originally licensed to locals.

"In such cases the concerned Russian or foreign national should be deemed to be doing business in violation of FEMA," Naik said.

A Russian allegedly murdered an Indian taxi driver this month in Morjim, 25 km from here. Morjim plays host to a large chunk of the 40,000 Russian tourists annually.

Goa, a popular tourism destination, is visited annually by more than two million tourists, nearly 500,000 of whom are foreigners.

I am shocked at the ignorance shown by Mr.Shantaram Naik remarks about the tourists.it clearly shows his ignorance towards Indian culture.Nudity has prevailed throughout most of mankind's existence in Indian culture. There are a number of ascetic sects in India whose members walked about naked as part of their spiritual discipline.

Every known group of naked Indian ascetics praised the values of the simple life which nudity encouraged.nother reason given for nudity was that it promoted "independent thought and self-assurance.Jainism often mentioned nudity as a method of becoming free from bonds...contentment with no clothes.Whereas the gymnosophists of India referred to their nudity as a "step toward attaining oneness with the whole universe, or moksha ('the bliss of enlightenment'),"

The Sakas, a Hindu sect of India, have transmitted their traditions of nudity to modem India through the thousands of explicit sculptures that remain on the walls of the city of Khajurako. "Tens of thousands of human and animal figures dance happily over and around the facade of these buildings.... Kings and commoners are depicted in joyous sexual union, completely naked except for beads, bangles, and decoration.... The beauty of the body was exalted, paraded even. And, since sexual function is part of the body, that too was exalted."Other Indian temples, such as the revered shrines at Konarak and Ellora, also display highly realistic erotic sculptures. These representations were obviously not regarded as obscene by the people who lived at the time they were created. Their directness of statement and their placement at central public locations shows that they were an essential part of the living experience of the community, part of the fabric of their social, educational, and religious life.

While modern Indian tour guides cannot avoid showing these explicit nude sculptures of Khajurako, Konarak, and Ellora to tourists from other lands, it is reported by many observers that they are not comfortable in doing so. It is evident that the body freedom depicted in the public art of ancient temples is not incorporated into the westernized lifestyle of contemporary India.
