150 Killed in Afghanistan Avalanches

Kabul, Feb 10 (IANS) At least 150 people were killed in avalanches in northern Afghanistan, an official said Wednesday.

"The avalanches have killed 150," Xinhua quoted Parwan provincial governor Mohammad Basir Salangi as saying. Many more were feared to be still buried under snow, he added.

The avalanches occurred Monday in the province's Salang Pass, some 90 km north of Kabul.

Teams of the public health ministry and Afghan National Security Forces have been searching for survivors at the site.

Media reports earlier said 70 people were killed in the avalanches. It is assessed that more bodies may be retrived from under the snow. First the toll was put at 28.
