Modi takes Pot Shots at Sonia - Invites Congress' Ire

Gandhinagar, Jan 29 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, airing his concern at rising prices, has again raised the question of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin, prompting an angry response from the party.

Addressing a a public meeting at Patan in north Gujarat Thursday night, Modi lashed out at the Congress-led central government for not responding to his letters for steps to curb the rising prices and wondered whether he would have to write in Italian to achieve his purpose.

"The central government seems deaf to my entreaties on curbing rising prices. I think I will now need to write in Italian," he said.

The chief minister said he wrote several letters to the central government but these failed to elicit any response.

"I have written letters in the language they can understand, urging them to take steps. But I think they have no empathy for the poor and it seems they are not willing to take steps to control rising prices," he said.

The Congress Friday reacted strongly to Modi's statements.

Leader of opposition Congress in the Vidhan Sabha Shaktisinh Gohil said: "Modi seems to thrive on the language of the ruffians. No wonder that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) lost in all the seats where he campaigned during the last Lok Sabha elections."

Gohil said there was no place for such remarks in democracy. "People who sit in high positions need to uphold the dignity of these places," he added.

In New Delhi, the Congress said it did not want to dignify Modi's remarks with a response.

"Modi has lost it," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

"Only Modi can make such a preposterous statement. I cannot possibly dignify such comments by speaking from this podium," Tewari said in response to queries about Modi's remarks.

Dear Mr. Nagesh Nayak If Mr. Modi has made development and helping the poor why there was set back in the general elections in Gujarat. Your BJP and Modi are helping only higher castes and not bothered about poor people. This was witnessed during NDA’s 5 years rule without any development only BJP leaders were shined and campaigned India shining program. They have increased gas prices considerably. If Karnataka bjp leadership is bothered about poor people they would have not increased milk prices and you are hailing increasing of milk prices in Karnataka? Self explanatory. Bjp ruled states are worst in the matter of law and order situation.

Mr. Yeddyurappa and Home minister are unable to cope with its own supported fundamental organizations who are out of control in Karnataka and hell bent on to destroy worship places. You are hailing bjp is providing 24 hour electricity. Where is 24 hour electricity only to your house? I am daily witnessing hide and seek electricity in Mangalore. Mr. Yeddyurappa has opposed whatever ruling party was doing while he was in opposition. BJP opposed civilian nuclear deal. What a shame Mr. Nagesh Nayak?

HI JOSEPH F GONSLAVES, BANNUR/PUTTUR,MANGALORE, Shri. Narendra Modi did his level best to help poor & common man. But your UPA with strong & internationally acclaimed hero is not bothered about poor & common mans problems. Your sharad Pawar is not aware of price rise & announce that price will go up further. After independence this is the first time prices of essential commodities are touching sky. BJP ruled states are the one who takes care of poor & common people. Shri. Narendra Modi did wonderful thing in GUJARATH. JAI HO.

Mr. Modi wanted to follow Madam Sonia Gandhi’s examples. Madam Sonia Gandhi knows Italian language and she was capable to unite all secular parties in one umbrella. If I (Modi) learn Italian language I can unite all the fundamental and communal parties to one umbrella (Perhaps that is what he thinks). Generally to say here the ruling party leaders are trying to pacify/make good ruling as per their wish and will.

The opposition leaders are trying hard to dismantle the ruling government by any means. The supporters also favor and condemn as much they can. So the trading charges of ruling and oppositions, supporters and condemners will go on relentlessly. Finally who will win the battle? It is the people who decide who will rule Congress, bjp, communist and other petty parties. In the general elections Congress secured the majority and every party was willing to support. If bjp was winning also some petty parties will support. To be in power for congress any caste will be of no problems. But for bjp only higher caste favored to become prime minister.

Mr Nagesh correct yourself first then try to criticise others. U should-write "Italian" not the country "Italy". H.Poojary, Soniaji didn't conduct genocide of innocent people, like Modi to call her exclusion from our countries politics. Majority of Indian people have rejected the narrow-minded theories consecutively. Even our Supreme Court has rejected this prejudiced, jaundiced mindset. Modi is after Cheap Populsit politics, He is afraid- he is loosing media or public attention with BJP's decline poltitically.

Mr. Nagesh Nayak has claimed Modi as "STRONG INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED HERO". This poor hero applied (begged) for visit visa for USA twice & the "hero's" (big zero) visa appliation was given a place in dust bin. Now 'amgelo nagesh' should think before promoting any person to a heroic designation.
