More Violence: Four Indians Attacked in Australia

Brisbane, Jan 28 (PTI) : In fresh incidents of violence against Indians in Australia, four community youths, including three cabbies, were attacked in two  separate incidents in Brisbane, a media report said on Thursday.

"Four more attacks on Indians in Brisbane, Queensland, took place," Sky news reported without giving out any more information about the victims.

"Three of them have been directed at cab drivers, one who told how he was punched and dragged from his taxi," it said.

Indian cabbies are believed to account for over 70 per cent of the cab driving jobs thus are said to be more prone to such attacks. The latest attacks against Indians increased the number of assaults to 10th this month.

In a separate incident, a 23-year-old pizza delivery youth was bashed up with a cricket bat and robbed while making a delivery in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, Brisbane-based Indian consul S D Singh said that police yesterday informed him about the attacks and also arrested one person involved in one of the incidents. He said he had no further details of the incidents.

"Indian High Commissioner Sujatha Singh will reach Brisbane today and will meet community leaders and members of the Queensland police to discuss the recent spate of attacks," Singh said. The meeting is expected to be held tomorrow.

Over 100 incidents of attacks on Indians, particularly students, were reported in 2009 and the attacks have continued this year unabated.

The Australian government has given a dossier on these incidents to India which reveals that nearly half of the attackers have been juveniles.

Under pressure from India, Australia has also set up a high-level ministerial working group to comprehensively study the spate of attacks on Indians in that country.

The first meeting of the high-level group will take place by the end of this week.

Even in Australia there are local anti-social elements like Bajrang Dal, Ram Sena, Shiv Sena etc. we have with their crazy ideology to which only their common sense can make them stop from doing this. They don’t understand that their anti-social act on innocent Indian students & poor cab drivers will damage their country’s image around the world and they will suffer further recession. The Sangh Parivar had damaged Indian popularity abroad and China is reaping the benefit out of this.

For god’s sake don’t get carried away with the past & look forward to what we can do for the betterment of our generations next. About Ozzie incident, the govt. media etc. should not over react instead give a friendly soothing message to the jobless & disturbed youngsters there.

Mr. Sunil F, Brisbane. Your comments appear to say that everything is wrong in India and almost all is right in Aussi land where you reside is not true. Anglo-saxons by nature are racists , the history shows. The anglo-saxon orgins of Australia are basically covicts sent from Britain. Now Australia has been inhabited by almost all from all over the world and Indians in particular aand many are driving taxis(even in USA, Canada, UK, Newzealand). The current scenario in Australia is targetted and cannot be compared to India because the two scenarios are different. The one thing I agree with you is Indians can return to India and there is no force for then to stay there but all may not be in a position to do that right now. You have a right to defend Australia because now perhaps live there and may not return but dont blame and pass derogatory comments on India. Indians know what is right in India and what is wrong here but trust me we are far better off than Australia in many sense. Hoards of Indians love this place because they belong here and do not want to runaway to other lands seeking better life whatever that may be.

Dear Mr. Nagesh Nayak Bangalore, As per your version of explanation Hindus targeted in Australia that the arrested couple are from Nepal obviously Bushtits. Do not allow all these Nepali's to cross the borders of India who are freely coming to India. Your earlier comment says India is built by strong Hindu roots. Before 100 century back and now also in India communal violence, dalit's are shot, cast system, dowry deaths, rape of innocent people and nuns, church attacks, temple attacks, mosque attacks, attacks against Indians within India, North and south, hate for other language people, regionalism, corruption, fundamentalism, hate towards other communities, oonch and neech, a cop's leg is chopped off in Tamil Nadu on the day light and the people are watching, burning of people and you say there is a strong Hindu root. This is the golden era because there was and is a strong Hindu roots provoking for all these elements. Is this your perception? Ulta chor Kotwal ko daante. Kindly explain. Mr. Nagesh Nayak. I condemn attacks against anybody anywhere in the world irrespective of caste creed color and religion. Let the God whom I believe take action against the wrong doers.

If 1% of Aussies are racists than its nothing to what racism, an Indian encounters in India itself. If 70 percent of Aussie Cabbies are Indians than they are vulnerable to be attacked at night by drug addicts regardless of their race and unfortunately some Indian cabbies were caught red hand on Camera taking the passengers merry go round to make some more money(Did the Indian media show that on your TV) and the worst thing is the majority dont have the communication skills and God Knows how they pass the IELTS back home. To protest in Australia one needs permit and no one has the authority to block the public places like trains and bus service! If u call a peace protest do it with a permit and peacefully not calling powerless Aussie police by names! Our students were warned before being dragged and unfortunately our students were disappointed as they were not air lifted with garlands, the way the Indian Police does against protesters in India! If you cant live by Australian government standards go back... See what our government has in store for us! People who attacked were not christians and neither do majority of Australians have respect for Jesus! Stop saying our Hindu brothers were attacked.Where was Indian Media when a George Sobin skeleton was found in a lake! Impotent media says what Bajrangdal and Shivsena wants to listen.Being the worlds worst racists we forget our cultural racism!Where are shetty's brothers when Shivsena is attackin North & South Hindu Indians

Naveen Shetty (I dont know whether it is your real name or not) I am wondering that for each and every petty things happening in mangalore you are concerned like anything. But when some dirty things are happening with your Indian brothers in Australia, you want to defend Australian Govt. Whats wrong with you guy. Common bro, they are your brothers living in Australia but may be they do not belong to your community or relegion.

Very sensible and realistic comments by you Roshan (Mangalore) and George Borromeo (Angelore, Mangalore). Trust me, I have been living here in Austrlia for the past 23 years, I have the first hand experience, time and time as I have said before, there is no truth at all that these attacks are racially motivated. Further, these sort of attacks on Indians can take place by another Indian or Nationality, as we learnt from the recent murder case of Indian national Ranjodh Singh, near Griffith, NSW, where a young married couple, apparently belong to Nepal, (co-fruit pickers of Singh), have been arrested in connection with this murder (Yahoo 7 News report dated 28th January 2010). Also, the Government of Australia is doing it`s best to curb these attacks, and the culprits are promptly dealt with severely. By the way, Mr. Nagesh Nayak (Bangalore), these attacks are not on Hindus only, as suggested by you! Some of your comments are over the top!

While Indian government has some responsibilty, it is not the total respnosibity. Attacks in Australia have been there for sometime now and the Australian government cannot control the situation perhaps it is time for the Indians to come home. If Indians are reluctant to come home then there is nothing the government can do except issue advisory to the Indian public not to travel to Australia. As more and more Indians are flooding Overseas counties because of their apetite for foreign lands these copy-cat attacks perhaps will continue in other coutries as well.

For Indians in Gulf, generally indias itself are a threat. If Malayalees are there, it is very hard to find Indian person from another state. Similarly, it applies to other states and other countries as well. This rivalry can be attributed to professional. With India, getting lot of credit worldwide in helping stabilize a recession hit economy, I think these attacks are going to increase further. But unlike in India, there are arrests, there will be punishment. That shows govt works. Certainly, difficult to accept many people, who can not differentiate law and lawlessness. In India victim is further victimized, in Australia criminals will be fearing arrest.

No doubt these are racially motivated attacks. Nothing is going to improve the Australians, when they see India as a power they will realize how good Indians are in business, education, and as a society. JAI HIND!

Most of the cases it was found that the attackers are juvanile and the victims are also in their teens, the equation tells us something. To add on most of the incidents happening at night and the victims are north Indians. So we can presume these are related to attitude and behaviour clashes between two rivals trying to impress opposite sex. This is purely my thinking, based and nurtured by my experiance with each Indian species.

Why we Indians are crying when some is attacked in Australia. Why Indian media is not highlightling the flight of ordinary people who are going thorough similar incidents all across India? With what face political leaders can ask the Australian government to take stiff action when the entire world knows what is happening in India.

Austrelian Govt completly failed from it's resposibilty to safegaurd/secure Indian student/taxi drivers from attcking. In the past Austrelian leaders promised to take action against the attackers were also failed miserably instead it's increasing day by day.Under such cicumastances India have to take hard stance against these on going senseless attacking with Austrelian leaders. It is very painful to hear a secular state like Aussie resorting on voilence on the basis of race. Before time running out, both govt need to take serious steps to curb the clashes else it's outcome will be not augur well for both coutries friendly relationship.
