Chidambaram Slams IPL for Not Picking Pak Players

PTI

New Delhi, Jan 25: : Terming non-inclusion of Pakistani players in IPL as a "disservice to cricket", home minister P Chidambaram on Monday said there was no  "hint or nudge" from the government to do so.

Describing some of them as "among the best Twenty20" cricket players, he said "these players were coming as individuals, it was not a Pakistan team."

"...I think it is disservice to cricket that some of these players were not picked. I don't know why the IPL teams acted in the manner they acted. But certainly to suggest that there was a hint or nudge from the government is completely untrue," the minister told a tv channel

No Pakistani player was bought by the eight IPL teams during an auction last week for the third edition of the competition despite Pakistan being the reigning world champions in the Twenty20 format of cricket, triggering a strong reaction from Pakistan government which saw it as snub and called-off official visits to India.

Asked whether he thought that Pakistan was over-reacting on the issue, Chidambaram said "well, you see, if no player from a country is picked, obviously the country does feel insulted. But whether the reaction is proportionate or not it is not for me to comment.

"But as I said, cricket lovers are disappointed that no player from Pakistan was picked. I think that could have been avoided."

Mr.Chidambram slams IPL..Yes,in a diplomatic style he hit two birds with one stone. He never wanted Pakistanis to play in IPL and that job was done by IPL.Now,he slammed IPL to please PAK Govt in a political way. Whatver it it is ..Indians don't want Pakistanis to enter their soil after Mumbai attack. Pak ISI is planning terrorist attack on India at this moment also when we are debating about whether Pak cricketers should play or not.

One of the readers commented here that NO MUSLIMS were KILLED in mumbai attack. That is wrong. In CST railway station 56 muslims were killed by Kasab & his partner (56 out of 169).This statistics is almost correct because in railway station they could not make people hostage. So indiscriminate firing at crowd. In Taj hotel, terrorists got engouh time to separate muslims, christinas and hindus.

Most of the people here are too immatured to understand Chidambaram and his philosophy. Chidambaram never supported Pakistan or Indian minorities, he supported the cause of cricket.People like Shahnawaz Kukkikatte and others lack intellectual caliber and wisdom, they can't understand what our HM is talking. Yes, we have problem with Pakistan, that doesn't mean that we have to take a total enemy approach towards Pakistan.Let the Government of India tackle the problem. The ignoring of Pak players may be viewed by others as a foreign policy strategy of India.IPL governing body should not poke its nose in the area where it doesn't have jurisdiction.IPL should concentrate only on cricket and development of cricket and making money. Mr.Modi and his team should not assume the role of defence or foreign ministries.

The Pakistan government and their cricket board feel insulted because their players have not been picked for IPL 3. What about the 1 Billion plus Indians and their feelings when they see the planners and architects of 26/11 and other terrorist acts living like VIP's in Pakistan. Are we not hurt when their impotent government under the orders of a corrupt military refuse to take action against these terrorists, inspite of providing all proof.

Home minister's statement lacks consistency with what other colleagues have been saying. The other day, SMK mentioned that 'Pak must evaluate the situation that led to this'. Now we have the home minister talking differently on a topic that does not come under his ministry's purview. Even if he has an individual view on this matter, he should restrict going to the media (which is behaving as a Pakistani media on this topic) given that he is holding a responsible position.

Lastly the point that players would be coming as individuals & not as a Pak team lacks logic. Why a team cannot come when individuals can come? I feel PC just given the fodder to the media to drag this issue too long and now we will have so many others coming out open with their views

Excellent points by Shahnawaz, Kukkikatte. IPL has shown more courage and common sense than our ruling government. After the massacre of Mumbai, no patriotic Indian will entertain Pakistanis. Hindus, Muslims and Christians - all died on 26/11. Chidambaram clearly lacks common sense and his remarks are insults to those who lost their lives in Mumbai terror attacks.

This is an stupid act by IPL. Instead of watching first class players from the winning team we would have to watch team b players. I do not know how this helps the quality of cricket played. It also does not help relationship between India and Pakistan when we try to punish the People of Pakistan for the acts of a few terrorists there. Sport should bring people together and should never divide.

Not picking up Pakis to IPL tournament is "disservice to cricket" or not, but certainly PC's comments are disservice to India. Yes, we all miss some of the excellent Pak players who have done a great job in the past IPL tournaments but excluding them from IPL-3 is just to show them how hurt we are. If Pakis are insulted for ignoring their players, each and every Indian is hurt from Pak-sponsored terrorism like 26/11, etc. Pak Cricket Board had gone bankrupt until India agreed to visit them in 2004, which gave them a lease of life. Like IPL, Bollywood too should boycot Pak actors and singers. India would be better off without them.

This is just a stunt by the UPA govt. to appease it vote bank. They are trying to have the cake and eat it too. First, they score a diplomatic victory by shaming the Pakis. Now they are trying to please the fundamentalist muslims. I find it hard to believe that the govt. was not behind the IPL boycott. Nevertheless, I congratulate IPL! If people like Shah Rukh are not happy with it's decision, they can form their own league in Pakistan and have all the Paki players. Get some of the terrorists too. We can have Taliban play the Al-qaida!

I personally feel the time is not right to have Pakistani players in the IPL given the bad state of relationship and the risk of issuing visas to the Pakistani fans. However the whole fiasco could have been avoided by not inviting the Pakistani players for the auction. This was in very bad taste.

I certainly dont agree with Chidambaram. Let these playrs bring pressure on to their government to bring the criminals of 26/11 to justice and hand over other suspects to India. We can manage without Pak players. Like average Pak citizen, they too have dirty mind and lot of complex. Better not to lay with them any more. We dont need Pakis to visit our country. If Chidambaram has that much soft heart for Pak players, let him build a team of his own from Bangladesh or any other third country , go to Pak and play. I am wondering is he the same HM who talked tough when India was attackced. No doubt terrorists shall draw inspiration from weak personalities like him and it will not be surprising if we have one more attack on our soil. Chidambram's statement is disgrace to India and Indian cricket. Hope he withdraws it.

chidambaramji, just ask the meaning of INSULT to pakistanis. IPL owners did good thing & shown courage by not ing paki players. when TAJ attacked & burnt did single paki player condemn the attack. Till now paki trained terrorists are infiltrating in INDIA. you should appreciate ipl owners. jai ho.

The politics of " eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth" is highly detrimental while dealing with sport. Even though, the U.S. and Cuba are not in talking term since 1961, recently the Cuban basket ball team came to play in the U.S. These friendly actions will pave the way for better relationship with enemies. If Siva Sena is trying to dictate the foreign policy of India through their uncivilized approach with sporting events, it will be leading to more divide in between the nations. I do fully agree with the Home Minister.

Non inclusion of Pakistani Players in IPL as a "disservice to cricket" is ofcourse yes!May be IPL's deliberated act or not would bring more contrversies to cricket and other sports between India and Pak.If IPL openly decleared Pakistani Players PERSONA NON GRATA in India for the reason security then it might be justified act.Any way IPL is a money spinng industry rather than sports/games institution!!! Jai Ho Cricket
