New Governors Announced, Patil for Punjab

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS) The government Sunday announced new governors for seven states with National Security Advisor (NSA) M.K. Narayanan being named for West Bengal and former home minister Shivraj Patil for Punjab.

Former defence secretary Shekhar Dutt, who was also the deputy NSA, has been appointed governor of Chhattisgarh replacing E.S.L. Narasimhan who will move to Andhra Pradesh. Narasimhan held additional charge of Andhra Pradesh after the exit of Narayan Dutt Tiwari last month.

Former union minister M.O.H. Farook will be the new governor of Jharkhand while K. Sankaranarayan is being shifted to Maharashtra. Himachal Pradesh Governor Prabha Rau is being moved to Rajasthan and former union minister Urmilaben Patel will be the new incumbent in Shimla.

The Congress core committee, headed by party president Sonia Gandhi, had decided to appoint Narayanan, 76, as governor in the Left-ruled state that has witnessed increasing Maoist violence in the past two years.

Narayanan has been holding the prime post in the country's security apparatus since January 2005.

Narayanan's new position throws open the race for the next NSA and former foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon was emerging as the consensus candidate.

Shivraj Patil, who was forced to quit as home minister in the wake of widespread criticism for his handling of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, was finally rewarded with a governor's post for his past services to the party. His appointment also signals an end to his role in active politics.

A former Lok sabha Speaker, Patil is considered close to Sonia Gandhi.

    We cannot compare Mr. Patil and Mr.Shekawat. Vice Presidents are elected but Governors are nominated. Here Mr. Patil was given the post just because of his closess to Mrs. Sonia.

    Mr Patil was loyal congressman but one of the weakest Home Ministers India ever had. Loyalty always pays and its not surprising that Mr Patil was given Governor's post. I partly agree with the comments of Nagesh Nayak, Sathish Shetty and Joseph Gonsalves. Every one of you have spoken truth. Lets start calling spade a spade.

    Dear Mr. Nagesh Nayak, It is better if you elaborate who are the terrorists to get paradise in Punjab? The actual terrorists are those who remove a fetus of women and killing the women live as well as the fetus. Secondly, Mr Yeddyurappa was making a set up of his own hair/combing the hair on the podium itself even if he doesn't have the hair. Thirdly, Mrs. Vasundararaje Shindya was more fond of her lipstick and Sarees than the administration and development of the state. Do you know our State Home Minister Dr. V.S. Acharya told Mr. XXX (name cannot be disclosed) to make an encounter of death to Mr. Atul? Wish you all the best Mr. Shivaraj Patil.

    NOW PUNJAB WILL BE PARADISE FOR TERRORISTS. DURING MUMBAI TAJ ATTACK SHIVRAJ PATIL WAS BUSY WITH MAKE UP & CHANGE OF DRESSES . HE WAS NOT BOTHERED OF ATTACK & KILLING OF INNOCENTS. NOW HE HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS PUNJAB GOVERNOR BY MADAMME. WHERE IS OUR STRONG & INT'L ACCLAIMED HERO? ONCE REJECTED BY UPA HOW HE GOT GOVERNOR BERTH? JAI HO.
