Mangalore: Seven Years Rigorous Imprisonment for Rapist of Minor Girl

Mangalore, Jan 14: The fast track court here has, through a judgment delivered on Tuesday January 12, sentenced Venkatesh Rama Bovi (21), a resident of Khan Nagar in Jogipur, Sirsi Taluk, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine, for keeping a minor girl in illegal confinement and raping her.

Venkatesh, who had approached a family living in Pajimogeru in the city, had urged a 13 year-old girl of the family to marry her, and had abducted her later. He had thereafter, kept her in illegal confinement at various places including Turuvekere, Sakleshpur, Alur etc. He had also raped her at a lodge in Sakleshpur on November 4, 2008 and at a house in Alur from November 10 to 23 the same year. The charge sheet filed by the policemen said that he had also threatened to kill the girl if she revealed his activities to others.

The accused was arrested on December 1, 2008 by Kavoor sub-inspector of police, Anantapadmanabha. The accused has also been sentenced to one year imprisonment each for illegal confinement of the girl and posing life threat to her. All the three sentences will run concurrently.

    The Law in India need to change immediately, especially to put an end to crimes and related cases.it is shameful and can't understand our Indian Government waiting for whom? to amend the Law.Murderers and rapist must be punished severely.capital/life sentece should be mandatory.These criminal cases should be handled only by a Special Court.I pray this will happen very soon.

    This guys should be in the jail for the rest of his life... our judges should learn from Americians were they put them for life or more and a quick judgement not like ours which it takes 19 years and still nothing is in the favour of victim...

    Rodney!!! We are still ruled by 1861 British Law. Then the law was designed with the British rulers in mind. It was soft on violations by the Britishers. Today our politicians too care little to change it as the old laws that suited the Britishers now suit our politicians and the criminals.
