Pak polio cases rises to 111 this year

Islamabad, Dec 20 (IANS): Seven new cases of polio have been reported from across Pakistan, taking the overall tally this year to 111.

Of the seven cases that were reported, four were from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the remaining were from Sindh and Balochistan, Dawn news reported on Thursday.

Of the 111 cases to have been reported this year, 79 are from KP, 17 from Sindh, nine from Balochistan, and six from Punjab.

According to official figures, Pakistan reported 12 cases in 2018, while Sindh had only one polio case that year, from Karachi.

There are only two countries in the world, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where polio cases are still reported.

Pakistan remains under a polio-linked travel restriction imposed by the WHO due to which since 2014 every person travelling aboard has to carry a polio vaccination certificate.
