Nagaland Governor to hold additional charge of Meghalaya

Shillong, Dec 17 (IANS): President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday appointed Nagaland Governor R.N. Ravi to discharge the gubernatorial functions of Meghalaya, in addition to his own duties, during the absence of Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy, a Raj Bhavan official said.

Ravi, who is also the Centre's interlocutor for the ongoing peace talks with various Naga insurgent groups, including the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah faction), was sworn in as Governor of Nagaland on August 1.

A former intelligence official, Ravi has specialisation on northeast India. Like other parts of northeastern states, Meghalaya has also witnessed massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which for the first time allows Indian citizenship on the basis of religion to undocumented illegal migrants belonging to six non-Muslim communities -- Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists -- from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh with a cut-off date of December 31, 2014.

The Meghalaya Assembly will hold a one-day special session on December 19 to pass a resolution to introduce Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
