Tension runs high near Delhi PHQ, more protesters gather

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS): Several students and social activists gathered at the Delhi Police headquarters near ITO in response to an emergency protest demonstration call given by the JNU students' union, here on Sunday.

Protesters blocked all roads leading to the police headquarters. Senior police officers have reached the spot and barricades have been set up as the mass of protesters have swelled.

The protesters raised anti-police slogans demanding action against the police.

The protest has been organised against the police action against students of the Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday afternoon. They have accused the police of entering the campus and beating up students.

Early in the evening, a protest organised against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned violent when protesters, said to be local residents, set four buses afire and indulged in stone pelting.

In the police action that followed, many were injured.
