Varanasi, Dec 14: Surging onion prices have caused one particular couple in Varanasi to protest rather unconventionally. As per one of the Hindu wedding traditions, the bride and groom usually exchange garlands made of flowers, however, the Varanasi couple had their garlands made of onion and garlic.
The couple reportedly wanted to make a statement against the high prices of onions.
Following this trend, the guests at the wedding presented the newlywed with a basket of onions as a wedding present.

Reacting to this, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Kamal Patel said, "Prices of onions are touching the sky from last one month, now people have started considering onion as precious as gold. In this wedding, the bride and groom used the garland made of onions and garlic. The prices of onion have risen to as high as Rs 120 per kg."
Another SP leader Satya Prakash said that the new couple wanted to oppose the high prices of onions and so decided on this unusual gesture.
"The bride and groom have tried to convey a message by opposing the skyrocketing prices of onions and other food commodities. Samajwadi Party has carried out several protests against such issues. This is a historic event for the couple," Satya Prakash added.
The SP leaders have shown disappointment and are carrying out protests against the increasing rate of onions in Varanasi.
