Citizenship law "Discriminatory" against Muslims, Says UN

Geneva, Dec 13(Agencies): The United Nations human rights office voiced concern on Friday that India's new citizenship law is "fundamentally discriminatory in nature" by excluding Muslims and called for it to be reviewed.

Violent clashes erupted in Delhi between police and thousands of university students on Friday protesting the enactment of the contentious new law.

The government has said the Citizenship Amendment Bill, approved by parliament on Wednesday, was meant to protect minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"We are concerned that India's new Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 is fundamentally discriminatory in nature," UN human rights spokesman Jeremy Laurence told a Geneva news briefing.

The new law does not extend the same protection to Muslim migrants as to six other religious minorities fleeing persecution, thereby undermining India's commitment to equality before the law, enshrined in its constitution, he said.

"We understand the new law will be reviewed by the Supreme Court of India and hope it will consider carefully the compatibility of the law with India's international human rights obligations," Laurence said.

    Unwanted contraversory created with our neighbours and all the muslim countries. It will have serious repurcussions for Indians not only in our neighbouring countries but also in the middle east and across the world.

    The world is a Global Village and no country can afford to show discrimination against any community in the modern era.

    With all due respect to the UNHRC, the criticism is narrow mindedness as Muslims do not suffer persecution in Pakistan which is a theocratic state; Pakistanis and the government persecute religious minorities which may include the Shia sect. In the guise of persecution, it is possible that Pakistan is clandestinely exporting terrorists to India.

    @Dr. Mohan Prabhu,
    If the issue is 'persecuted minorities' from our neighbouring nations to be granted Indian citizenry, then by default, minority muslims from Sri Lanka and Rohingya muslims (who probably are the most persecuted minorities in our region), too need to be granted Indian citizenship, regardless of when the date of persecution began in those countries ... Facts are facts, and BJP govt cannot twist facts thro' selection of people only based on their religion.

    India is not a Kingdom or a Banana Republic. It is a Republic with constitution & Laws. Kashmir was Lawfully with condition joined India with Article 370 & 35A. Only people of Kashmir can change it, cancel it or Keep it with UN supervised State legislature election and mandate from Jammu & Kashmir Citizens.

    Kashmir problem will hunt India forever with life & resources for not following the law and will become example for other regions/states of India to claim autonomy, rights and separation from Dominion of India.

    Current Nationalistic policies of our Government and courts is leading us in to Lawless Banana republic and paving the way for poverty and disintegration of British united Dominion of India.

    For our ancestors sins of cast system & untouchability God had divided us in to many regions, states, languages and cultures and we never able to have united Hindu Indian State on our own or able to depend our borders from small group of horse riders from the North or small group of sailers from the Arabian sea.

    Let us pray Sri Krishna and work towars wisdom to follow existing Laws and our constitution to retain Mogul & British unified Dominion of India.
