Four held with Pangolin scales in Kolkata


Kolkata, Dec 7 (IANS): Four persons were arrested from north Kolkata for possessing six Pangolin scales for the purpose of illegal trading, the police said on Friday.

Pangolin is enlisted as an endangered species as per Schedule 1 of Wildlife Protection Act.

Joint Commissioner (Crime) Murlidhar Sharma said the accused -- Jamini Mahato, Shankar Mahato, Kashi Nath Parui and Tapan Paul -- were picked up from Rajendra Dev Lane under the Jorasanko police station.

Parui is a resident of Hooghly district, Paul hails from Kolkata, while the other two accused are from Purulia district, he said.

A case under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act has been registered at the Jorasanko police station.
