SP seeks central rule in UP, Cong says it has woken up late

New Delhi/Lucknow, Dec 5 (IANS): After the Samajwadi Party (SP) demanded the President rule and dismissal of the Yogi Adityanath-led government in UP over the law and order situation, the Congress said the SP had woken up late.

The Congress said it had been raising the issue of the state government's failure for the past one year.

Congress Spokesperson Rajiv Tyagi told IANS, the way Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had intervened on various issues, like Unnao and Shahjahanpur rape cases and DHFL corruption, and led the Sonbhadra agitation the other political parties were "flabbergasted".

She had been raising the issue of education and women safety and her pro-people had left a mark in the state politics, Tyagi said.

Demanding the central rule, Ramgopal Yadav, leader of the SP -- the main opposition party in the state, said reports of two gruesome rapes, one of which ended in an attempted murder, had spread a sense of fear among people.

A rape survivor was set afire by two accused, out on bail, along with their three associates in Unnao, just 60 km away from Lucknow. The two rape accused were released on bail just a day ago.

The incident took place in Hindu Nagar village of Unnao where the minor had been gang-raped in March.

The girl was on her way to a court hearing when she was accosted by the accused. They took her to a secluded spot, poured kerosene and set her ablaze. When villagers informed the police, they first took her to the district hospital from where she was referred to the Trauma Centre of King George Medical University in Lucknow.
