Sitharaman's onion remark draws amusing comments

New Delhi, Dec 5 (IANS): A day after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's remark in Parliament that she doesn't consume much onions and garlic, Twitter users posted memes and funny comments on Thursday.

Taking a dig at Sitharaman, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram asked if she ate avacados instead.

#OnionPrices trended with 9,793 tweets while #NirmalaSitharaman had got 7,990 tweets. A user posted a video clip of a man partaking of meal while licking an onion, garlic and tomato dangling in front of him through strings.

Another posted the picture of Sitharaman and her cabinet colleague Smriti Irani holding a protest over increasing fuel prices when her party was in opposition at the Centre.

One post had a picture of a basketful of onions along with the comment: "Today, Indian onion is stronger than American dollar".

One user questioned why people were "not talking about casteism in Sitharaman's comment". "It reinforces BJP idea of India is for UC Hindus only," she contended.

One meme had a scene from a Bollywood flick in which a rich family is seen having fun. The accompanying comment was: "A South Delhi family after successfully winning the bargaining argument with onion seller".

A user posted a picture of a scene from a movie with the caption that onions will henceforth be sold by jewellers. "Told-you-so moment from Three Idiots," the comment read.

One tweet talked about a hypothetical conversation. "Common man: The air is so polluted in Delhi. Finance Minister: I don't breathe a lot of air.

"That's how your statement was ma'am!"

It's this very lady who when came to Karnataka upon questioning on hypocrisy of exporting beef but banning cow-slaughter, grumpily said 'what is exported is not COW meat'

Meaning, exporting Beef is OK as long as it's not COW meat but getting caught with beef is not matter what animal it belongs to, its COW MEAT !

We have a dumb vegetarian for FM who doesn't eat onion hence doesn't care now costly it becomes !

She is getting into laughing stock by each passing day! This is what happens when you appoint unfit people incapable of handling FM. She does not each fish mean no one should eat??? What about the taxes government earning on onion and garlic? Indirect taxes of transportation, road tax and son??? This lady has no idea on this. She will ask one of the economists to answer the question! No wonder India is going downhill under jokers!!

If elected party and members/ministers comment like this, what benefit they will bring for the people and the Country. I was astonished watching her foul mouth utter such irresponsible comments in the parliament. India is a Nation of 1.3 Billion people and the country is not owned her because she is a minister of Finance. That shows her irrational attitude. She and her family member may or may not eat onions that does not mean that the prices of onion should be allowed float as per hoarder wish & control. Very mean and selfish comments. That proves her fly background and the morals she follows in the family. BJP members are trying rule and impose rules by force which should come to an end.

This lady is unfit to be a cook, how come she be a Finance Minister of our Country. She dont know how to speak. Its rediculous. How come she can manage our Financial situation which is coming to earth like a collapsed building. Our economy is weaker than our neighbouring countries and we should be ashamed of this. Our FM is in no comparison to Manmohan singh and Chidambaram.

Our Great FM is indirectly hinting at Indians to stop eating onions and garlic.
Instead of finding solutions to controlling the rising price she is asking us stop eating Onions "Na rahega baans na bajegi bansuri"
