SC defers hearing on plea against bail given to Pragya Thakur

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Friday deferred hearing for two weeks on a plea challenging the bail granted to controversial BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur by the Bombay High Court in April 2017.

Pragya Thakur is one of the accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case in which seven people were killed on September 29, 2008 in Malegaon, a communally-sensitive textile town in Nasik district in Maharashtra.

In a plea, Nisar Ahmed Haji Sayed Bilal, father of one of the blast victims, said that Thakur is a powerful person who may potentially influence the witnesses involved in the case.

Bilal said the Bombay High Court had erred in recognising Thakur as an influential person, who could tamper with the evidence and also influence witnesses. The plea came up for hearing before a bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar.
