Indore, Nov 29: A 30-year-old man was on Thursday made to pick garbage from the streets as a form of punishment for defecating in public.
The civic authorities asked the man to accompany sanitation workers in a waste collection vehicle and help them in their work for five hours since he could not afford to pay the fine for open defecation.
In a statement to PTI, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) health officer, Vivek Gangrade, stated that a civic team reached Pologround Industrial Area on Thursday morning to inspect cleanliness, where they found the man defecating in the open.

The man who works as a daily wage labourer was liable to pay Rs 100 fine for open defecation. Apologizing for his act, he asserted that he was an outsider and did not have enough money to pay the fine.
As an alternative to the fine, the authorities asked the man to get onto an IMC-run vehicle deployed for collecting garbage from litter bins kept along the city streets. The man was required to carry out the task from 7 am till noon.
Earlier this year, Indore was adjudged India's cleanest city for the third straight year in the central government's cleanliness survey and the civic officials are striving hard to retain their glory.
