Air India to be closed if privatisation bid fails: Minister

New Delhi, Nov 27 (IANS): Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday said in Rajya Sabha that national carrier Air India will have to close down if it is not privatised.

He, however, said that a favourable deal would be ensured for all the employees.

"I will go to that extent and say that," the Minister said replying to a question in the Upper House.

Taking a small pause Puri said that the airline would be closed down if not privatised.

The government is readying the bid document for selling off its entire stake in the national carrier and has set March 31 as deadline for completing the disinvestment process. In earlier attempt, the Modi government had in May, 2018 invited the expression of interest (EoI) to sell 76 per cent of its stake but not a single private party showed interest in the first stage of bidding.

The top aviation ministry officials and Air India Chief Ashwani Lohani are currently meeting the potential investors before launching the bid process.

Hardeep Puri had last week said that the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Air India had earlier met and taken some decisions.

Asked by a member in the Rajya Sabha if pilots had been leaving the airline in the wake of privatization, the Minister replied in negative.

Air India has stayed afloat on government support. The UPA-II government had cleared a financial package of over Rs 30,000 crore to ensure the public sector carrier survived.

After that, Modi’s never ending foreign trips will cost more to our treasury. (In case foreign investors bid for the sale price per share. Also, there are no entrepreneurs in the country having so much liquidity unless they cheat the banks)
Ambani/Adani groups may benefit from government credit lines and bid.

This is the deference between existing government and previous government.
Previous government was at least favoring people. Present government is type of dictatorship.
    Only good for super rich.

Closing down is not an option the government should look at. How can the government throw in the towel? If privatisation fails, the government should look at steps to revive the airline. No attempt appears to have been made to revive Air India. Air India was once the pride of India. It would be extremely sad if this airline is closed down. The government should rope in directors who are willing to work and should recruit efficient and hard working staff. Air India is an international brand and should never ever be allowed to fold up. It should function the way the Western Railway runs in Bombay. So efficient. If the railways can do such a fantastic job, why not Air India? Why is the government not making efforts to run Air India efficiently? Indians are among the most efficient people in the world. The world will laugh at us if we are unable to run our airline efficiently.

There is a good carton, a young chap well dressed in suit, chanting Modi Modi in 2014, the same goes on phases, in 2019 he is shown just with an underwear, still chanting Modi, Modi, with a frightened face of loosing that too. Fact is country has lost quite a deal, during all these Modi years. All know it.

Everytime, a Modi Bhakth speaks these days, it is quite amusing to imagine them that way.

Why did the govt take seven years to take the decision ? Consultation with Ambani brothers, Adanis, did not come to an final decision ? They had too much on their plate that they did not find time to buy AI ? Or, Feku/Dhaaku couldn't spare time for AI in the milee of deciding who will manufacture Rafale ?
