Five arrested from Kolkata hotel for gambling


Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS): Five persons were arrested for gambling from a central Kolkata hotel room late on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police rounded up the five persons at around 11.30 p.m. from a ground floor room of Heera Holiday Inn Hotel on Elliot Road under the Park Street police station for being engaged in gambling using playing cards.

Total cash of Rs 1,80,600 being used board money, four sets of playing cards, six mobile phones and other documents were seized from their possession, Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner (Crime) Murlidhar Sharma told reporters.

Those arrested include the hotel owner.

A case under sections 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, as also 3 and 4 of the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competition Act has been registered.
