UK MEP claims J&K invite cancelled on 'free access' demand

London/New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS): Chris Davies, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the UK, on Tuesday claimed he had received an invitation to travel to Jammu and Kashmir, but the offer was withdrawn after he insisted on "free access to speak with local people."

Davies was to be part of the delegation of MEPs who visited Kashmir on Tuesday, the first foreign delegation to visit the region after the August 5 revocation of special status.

"I am not prepared to take part in a PR stunt for the Modi government and pretend that all is well. It is very clear that democratic principles are being subverted in Kashmir, and the world needs to start taking notice," said Davies in a statement.

"I fear that this is not going to end well. Governments do not win the hearts and minds of people by taking away their freedoms and imposing military rule. The risk of a violent backlash is all too evident," he said.

According to reports, the invite to the MEPs was issued by an organisation called WESTT - Women's Economic & Social Think Tank.

In the invite to Davies, which is doing the rounds on social media, WESTT head Madi Sharma promises a "prestigious VIP meeting" with India's Prime Minister, in addition to the Kashmir trip.

On Monday, members of the European Parliament met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi during which he expressed hope that they have a fruitful visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

"Their visit to Jammu and Kashmir should give the delegation a better understanding of the cultural and religious diversity of the region of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, apart from giving them a clear view of the development and government priorities of the region," a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

It’s a PR stunt, says Europe about MEPs visiting Kashmir today. They neither represent the European Union nor the governments in their country. The credibility of Kashmir-bound MEPs is widely being questioned even in Europe.
The visit, coming barely a week after the Government of India found itself at the receiving end in the US Congress for its Kashmir policy, appears to be a deliberate attempt by GOI at damage control.

Will they be allowed to address the media, in India or in Brussels, on their impressions? And will that amount to engaging in politics?

I've searched the EuropeanParliament website and can find no mention of a delegation to India to investigate Kashmir, as widely reported in Indian news outlets.
It is unclear how these MPs were selected, by whom and with what mandate and reporting requirements.
A leaked letter written to Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies has exposed the real motive behind the so-called delegation of 27 EU MPs visiting Kashmir on Tuesday. The said letter has brought the role of one ‘international broker’ Madi Sharma under the scanner. The letter released by Davies shows how Sharma had extended the invitation to EU MPs to visit India on a fully sponsored trip and take part in a ‘prestigious VIP meeting with the Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Narendra Modi.’
Modi Ji, why are you allowing MPs from EU but not Indian MPs to visit J&K?
Is it an insult to the Indian Parliament? Who are these 28 MPs from the EU and who invited them? How were they selected? The visit of EU MPs’ delegation is snowballing into a major political controversy.

It’s a slap on Modi Govt face. After ICAR siding with Pakistan regarding Modi flight, this is another blow to Modi advisors. His advisors are bent on shaming Modi and India. They should study the things before committing aIndias prestige.
