Morocco seizes eight tonnes of cannabis

Rabat, Oct 26 (IANS): The Moroccan police seized on Friday eight tonnes of cannabis in the suburb of the northern city of Tangiers.

Five people were arrested for their alleged links to an international drug trafficking network during the operation, said the Moroccan police in a statement.

The security operation took place in a farm 20 km from Tangiers.

Three inflatable boats, marine navigation equipment, 20 barrels of fuel and two wireless communication devices were seized.

Equipment used in international drug trafficking was also seized, including a tractor-trailer, eight large trailers containing cavities designed for the trafficking of large quantities of drugs, four cars with false registration plates and bladed weapons, the statement said.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis farming in the last decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the cannabis resin, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
