NEW YORK, Mar 23: Four Indian IT students, including three girls, were killed and another was injured when an off-duty and apparently drunk policewoman  crashed her car into their vehicle on a highway in Missouri.

The five, all hailing from Andhra Pradesh and studying for MS degree in information technology in Eastern Illinois University, was returning home on a Honda Accord when the policewoman's SUV, speeding on the wrong lane, hit them head-on in Des Peres, authorities said.

Priya, Anita and Anusha

Four of the students — Anusha Anumolu (23), Satya S Chinta (25), Anita Lakshmi (23) and Priya Muppvarapu (23) — died on the spot while 27-year-old Nitesh Adusumilli, who was driving the car, was seriously injured.

The policewoman, identified as 41-year-old Chrissy Miller, was off-duty from her job at the Sunset Hills Police Department. She is also in a critical condition at St John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, media reports said.

"They had a plan to go to an Indian restaurant and going to bowling alley, and they were returning back to home," said Suren Pathuri, an acquaintance of the victims. He said the bodies of the four victims will be sent to India.

"We do suspect that alcohol may have played a part in this crash on Miss Miller's part," said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergent Al Nothum.

"The investigation is ongoing," he said.

Nagesh, I feel sorry for you, as I have noted that your comments on any article make people either to laugh or angry since they are just baseless. Moreover, I feel sorry for all females in your family, who have to put up with a man whose comments and thoughts are always directly or indirectly degrading women - be it driving, going to a pub or a cinema hall with a friend. If women were weak, you would not have been conceived in a woman's womb.

With regards to the incident, the woman cop should be given a very harsh punishment. Whether male or female, drinking at home or in a pub is not the issue. Harsh punishment should be given to anyone drinking and driving. My heartfelt condolence to the families of the innocent young victims and only pray that people realise the seriousness of drinking and driving.

My heartfelt condolence to the family of the deceased...May their soul rest in peace. Mr.Nagesh..This was an unfortunate accident where a woman was responsible. But I do not agree with the survey that women are weaker in driving talent when compared to men . Instead they are more careful drivers than men who are invovled in more accidents!!

Very sad that an off-duty drunk lady cop killed three beautiful girls in their prime life- the District Attorney shall charge this off-duty drunk lady copy with tripple murder and put her away in the prison for three life long sentences. Even so the colosal loss can not be comprehended or justified under no means, but the lesson learnt is that drunk lady cop is a criminal deserves to be behind the bars.

Our heart and prayers go to the girl's parents who have to bear for their life long the agony of loss of their loved ones. All those Indian students who read this tragedy must pay attention to buy good safe cars and learn to drive with care and self defene.

It is sad indeed that such gory incidents in recent times have been taking the toll of young Indian techies in the United States. It is unbelievable how many must go this way before it can be safely determined to what extent a targetted community is willing to risk it's life for the sake of a dream. However this particular incident is not related to any violence of the nature referred. it being an accident.

My heart goes out to the parents of these three young ladies and the young man who had ventured into going to the U.S. to prosecute their studies and build careers for themselves. I is very surprising that the guardian low law is responsible for this event. My heartfelt sympathies to the parents and relatives of the victims. Joe Gonsalves
