Mangalore: Yakshagana Yet to be Globally Recognized—Kumble Sundar Rao

Mangalore, Jan 21: Although Yakshagana is a popular folk art of Karnataka, it is yet to get global recognition, said state Yakshagana Academy president Kumble Sundar Rao.
Rao was speaking at the inaugural of the Aruva Koragappa Shetty Cultural Foundation held on Monday January 19, at Town Hall.
“The folk art of a state is recognized and honoured. But, in Karnataka, Yakshagana has not got due recognition as it deserves. The setting up of the Yakshagana Academy was intended to be a step inthis direction”, he said. A committee will soon be formed to work for this, he added.
‘Yaksha Pradeepa’ award was presented to promising Yakshagana artiste Deepak Rao, and the youth talent award to K Krutika Rao and Prasad Cherkady.
Veteran Yakshagana artistes Patlaguttu Mahabala Shetty, Fakir Beltangady, Harinarayan Baipadittaya, Koltige Narayan Gowda, Mundaje Balakrishna Shetty, Janardhan Gudigar, and Mijar Timmappa were also felicitated.
Financial assistance was presented to retired Yakshagana artiste Pakalakunja Krishna Naika. The programme was presided over by Karkala Billava Sangh president D R Raju.
Odiyoor Sri Gurudevanand Swami also graced the occasion.
Kateel temple priest Laxminarayan Asranna, Shanady Ajit Hegde, Kannada Sahitya Parishat Dakshina Kannada district president S Pradeepkumar Kalkura, P Kishan Hegde, K Deviprasad, N Subbanna Shetty, B P Karkera, and Vishwanath Shetty, were present on the dais.
Before the stage programme, the Yakshagana play ‘Vidyunmati Kalyana’ was staged.
